The 9th Annual Emirates Glass LEAF Awards proved to be a huge success attracting a whole host of recognisable faces from the architectural community. This spectacular evening took place in the luxurious surroundings of the Four Seasons Park Lane Hotel which was admired by the many guests that attended.

The 2012 shortlist included some of the world’s most iconic buildings and designs. The lucky winners of the evening were:

LEAF Awards 2012 Life time Achievement Award is honoured to Daniel Libeskind

Congratulations to Daniel Libeskind who has been honoured with the Lifetime Achievement in architectural Community award for the 9th annual Emirates Glass LEAF Awards.

This is a new award that recognises an individual for service to the architectural community and their body of work.

Daniel Libeskind, B.Arch. M.A. BDA AIA, is an international architect and designer. His practice extends worldwide from museums and concert halls to convention centers, universities, hotels, shopping centers, and residential projects. Born in Łód´z, Poland in 1946, Libeskind was a virtuoso musician at a young age before giving up music to become an architect.

He has received numerous awards and designed world-renowned projects including: the Jewish Museum in Berlin, the Denver Art Museum, the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, the Military History Museum in Dresden, and the masterplan for Grand Zero among others. Daniel Libeskind’s commitment to expanding the scope of architecture reflects his profound interest and involvement in philosophy, art, literature and music. Fundamental to Libeskind’s philosophy is the notion that building are crafted with the perceptible human energy, and that they address the greater cultural context in which they are built. Daniel teaches and lectures at universities across the world. He resides in New York City with his wife and business partner, Nina Libeskind.

LEAF Awards 2012

Now in its ninth year, the Emirates Glass LEAF Awards honours the architects designing the buildings and solutions that are setting the benchmark in the global architectural community. The awards are open to all individuals and organisations that have made an outstanding contribution to the world of architecture. Previous winners have included Zaha Hadid, David Chipperfield, SOM, Steven Holl and Terry Farrell.

We would like to congratulate all the winners of the 2011 LEAF awards and especially our overall winner OBR Open Building Research for Milanofiori Residential Complex, Milan, Italy (pictured below). Other winners included Populous for the London 2012 Olympic Delivery Authority, UK, Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architechs for The Crystal København, Denmark and Steven Holl Architects for Cite de L’Ocean et du Surf, Biarritz, France, City of Biarritz amongst many others.

To reflect the feedback and the varied entries in 2011, we are pleased to announce there will be three new categories for the 2012 Emirates Glass Leaf Awards. These are Lifetime Achievement in Architectural Community, Best Future Building 2012 and Refurbishment of the Year Award.

LEAF Awards 2012 Judging Panel

The LEAF Awards 2012 judging panel will comprise of a number of key individuals drawn from various areas of the international architectural design and construction community including:

Irving Brauer

Irving Brauer is the principal of Brauer Associates, a highly focused team of marketing specialists with over 25 years’ experience in enabling and assisting clients to enter or expand their position in the building specification market. He has received the Hanover Good Design product award and has been Chair of the South London Society of Architects. Irving is currently a member of the NGCC steering committee and Chair of the PIA.

Phil Holden

Phil is the Managing Director of Pascall+Watson architects and holds the position of Non Executive Director of the Royal Institute of British Architects Professional Services Board. In the 11 years of being MD Phil has led the practice to develop into an internationally renowned firm with offices in London, Ireland and Abu Dhabi and one of the top 25 architectural practices in the UK. He is an accomplished designer and an expert in framework relationships and supply chain management, with years of experience with clients across the transportation, education and commercial sectors.

Lucy Bullivant

Lucy Bullivant is an architectural curator, critic and author. She was elected for an Honorary Fellowship of RIBA in 2010. A cultural historian with a Master’s degree from the Royal College of Art, she began her twenty-three year career working as an art curator and director of open art exhibitions. In the early 1990s she was Heinz Curator of Architectural Programmes at the Royal Academy of Arts, London. Lucy has worked internationally with leading museums, galleries, cultural institutions, publishers and corporate bodies since 1987. Many speculative exhibition and conference projects have been realised as a result of her fundraising work.

Paolo Brescia

Paolo is partner of OBR Open Building Research established with Tommaso Principi after working together for Renzo Piano. Paolo and OBR develop their experimental line through the participation in international projects involved in public and social programs in newly advanced urban development countries. Their research is focused on urban design promoting the sense of community and the individual identities. Paolo links his working experience with the academic world as guest professor at Accademia di Architettura di Mendrisio, Helsinki Aalto University, Academy of Architecture of Mumbai.

He was awarded by the RIBA with the honorable mention AR Awards for Emerging Architecture and by Triennale di Milano with the honorable mention for the gold medal for Italian architecture under 40.

In 2011 he received in Rome the Ance premium for the best realized project designed by young architect and was the overall winner of the LEAF Awards in London 2011.
