This exhibition is an itinerary that reflects the discussions held by the 2017 jury. It displays the works reviewed and selected by it, emphasising the importance of the urban character of Europe.
The 40-shortlisted works are organised according to the urban fabric where they are found: Exourban, Periphery, Consolidated and Historic Centre; the parts that construct for this exhibition an imaginary city that we call the “City of 40”. As geographer Francesc Muñoz wrote in the Atlas.
European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture Mies van der Award 1988-2015, “the EU Mies Award is an architecture prize with a European vocation that celebrates urban fragments of excellence.”
DeFlat Kleiburg in Amsterdam by NL architects and XVW architectuur is the 2017 Winner of Prize. DeFlat is an innovative renovation of one of the biggest apartment buildings in The Netherlands called Kleiburg, a bend slab with 500 apartments in Amsterdam’s Bijlmermeer neighbourhood.
Consortium DeFlat rescued the building from the wrecking ball by turning it into a “Klusflat”, meaning that the inhabitants renovate their apartments by themselves. The client is Kondor WesselsVastgoed. NL architects were awarded the Emerging Architect Prize of the EU Mies Award in 2005 for their work BasketBar in Utrecht.
In the exhibition, visitors will find the Winners and Finalists in the spotlight of the “City of 40” emerging as nodes among the other works. They help us move around the exhibition by acting as both physical and symbolic reference points. The exhibition is complemented with the the EU Mies Award Catalogue 2017, a tool to interpret the Award, and the EUMiesAward app which allows us to visit the Prize works throughout Europe.
The Centre for Fine Arts, Brussels, BOZAR, has a longstanding knowledge in fields of architecture and heritage, and has largely promoted European architecture since its creation by architect Victor Horta in the 1920s. Today BOZAR Architecture is well-respected after the organisation of various lectures by international architects, monographic exhibitions, and installations and debates on contemporary urban and social challenges in Europe.

EU Mies Award 2017 Exhibition Extended

THE FUNDACIÓ MIES VAN DER ROHE EXTENDS THE “EU MIES AWARD 2017” EXHIBITION
The Fundació Mies van der Rohe is extending the ‘EU Mies Award 2017’ exhibition until 11 June. The exhibition showcases models, photos, texts and videos of the projects nominated for the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award 2017.

On display in the Palau Victòria Eugènia in the Montjuïc fairgrounds, the exhibition gives people in or near Barcelona a great opportunity to see the best architecture built in Europe in the last two years. Visitors will also discover the impressive industrial space of the Palau Victòria Eugènia (from 1929), which has opened its doors to the public for the first time just for this exhibition, organised by the Fundació Mies van der Rohe.
The winning project is DeFlat Kleiburg in Amsterdam, by NL Architects and XVW Architectuur and the winner in the category of Emerging Architect is Navez social housing in Brussels by MSA/V+. On 26 May, the winners respectively received the main Prize and the Emerging Architect Special Mention in an edition that recognised the renovation of existing buildings and collective housing. After it ends in Barcelona, the ‘EU Mies Award 2017’ exhibition will travel around Europe and abroad in the next 18 months, with its first stop at the BOZAR Centre for Fine Arts, Brussels in September 2017.
Furthermore, the new Award catalogue that accompanies the exhibition is now available for purchase. The publication is a compilation of all the works nominated for the 2017 edition, providing an overview of architecture in Europe in the last two years. It is the sum of all pieces of architecture, urban fabrics, cities and territories: a broad architectural sample of sizes, materials and unique strategies that share the fact of being European. This large group of works was classified to better understand them and to make the jury’s selection process easier.
There could be many different ways to classify them and ours is not fixed or the only one, but it does aim to explain or summarise a multi-faceted reality and suggest different relations. The catalogue comes in two separate but complementary volumes: “The Compilation” and “The Jury Selection”. It may be purchased at: https://shopmies.com/en/mies-foundation-publications/207-eu-prize-forcontemporary-architecture-mies-van-der-rohe-award-2017.html.
Barcelona City Council established the Fundació Mies van der Rohe in 1983, initially for the purpose of renovating the German National Pavilion designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich for the 1929 Barcelona International Exhibition. One of the Fundació’s most prominent activities is its joint organisation with the European Commission of the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award, one of the most prestigious of all European architecture prizes.

Barcelona, May 25, 2017 – At a press conference held today in Barcelona the European Commission and the Fundació Mies van der Rohe have presented the winners of the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award 2017.
DeFlat Kleiburg in Amsterdam is the 2017 Winner of Prize. The architecture office NL architects and XVW architectuur have explained their project to the press. The 2017 Emerging Architect Prize has been awarded to the Brussels studios MSA/V+ for the work NAVEZ – 5 social units at the northern entrance of Brussels. The architects have presented their housing project that fulfills the double ambition of the local authorities: to represent the urban revalidation scheme with a landmark at the entrance of the city and to provide exemplary apartments for large families. The client is the City of Schaerbeek.
The two awarded projects have been chosen from a list of 355 works from 36 European countries. Five finalists were selected and visited by the Jury: Rivesaltes Memorial Museum, Katyn Museum in Warsaw, DeFlat Kleiburg in Amsterdam, Kannikegården in Ribe and Ely Court in London, accompanied by the authors of the works, who also gave lectures open to the public.
The press conference was also attended by Daniel Mòdol, President of the Fundació Mies van der Rohe, Michel Magnier, Director for Culture and Creativity, DG Education, Youth, Sport and Culture of the European Commission, the President of the Jury, Stephen Bates and the Director of the Fundació Mies van der Rohe, Anna Ramos.
Michel Magnier, Director for Culture and Creativity, DG Education, Youth, Sport and Culture of the European Commission, and Daniel Mòdol, President of the Fundació Mies van der Rohe, will give the winners the prizes of 60.000 € (main prize) and 20.000 € (prize for the Emerging Architect) on May 26 at the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion in Barcelona.
With the aim of promoting knowledge of Contemporary Architecture and its values, the Fundació Mies van der Rohe has also informed of the following proposals and activities that has promoted in the framework of the 2017 edition of the Prize:
Architecture days and EU Mies Award app
During the week previous to the Award Ceremony, the buildings of the EU Mies Award Winner (Kleiburg, Amsterdam), the Emerging Architect Winner (Navez), the 4 Finalist works (Rivesaltes Memorial Museum, Katyn Museum in Warsaw, Kannikegarden in Ribe and Ely Court in London) organized events to explain the architecture of these places in situ.
In order to bring the Prize closer to the citizens, and spread knowledge about good architecture, the Fundació Mies van der Rohe has prepared a mobile app so that everyone can view all the works nominated in this year’s edition of the Award in their mobile phone and find out exactly where they are and how to get there. The application is free and available for download from any mobile phone with the name: EUMiesAward. In addition to the works nominated for the 2017 edition, the cities of Berlin, London, Dublin, Paris and Barcelona have included all the works nominated in every edition. Upcoming updates will incorporate works that correspond to previous and future editions to provide a complete overview of European architecture since 1988.
EU Mies Award 2017 Exhibition and Catalogue
The Palau Victòria Eugènia, in the Montjuïc fairgrounds, has been opened for the first time to the public to showcase models, texts and videos of the projects presented in the 2017 edition of the EU Mies Award. It is, at the same time, a way to offer the citizens to know this enclosure. The exhibition includes models, texts, sketches and drawings of the works of this edition. The exhibition will travel around Europe and internationally in the next 18 months, with its first stop at BOZAR Centre for Fine Arts Brussels in September 2017.
Also the Fundació Mies van der Rohe has presented the EU Mies Award 2017 catalogue, that it is a compilation of all the works nominated for the present edition, which provides a panorama of architecture of the past two years in Europe. This is a sum of all the fragments of architectures, urban fabrics, cities, and territories. A wide architectural sample of sizes, materials and unique strategies that share being European. Classification organises this great group of works, in order to be able to understand them and make the jury selection process easier. There are many ways of classifying, and the one that we present here is not the only one nor is it fixed, but it has the desire to explain/synthesise a many-sided reality and suggest relations. The catalogue is divided into two separate but complementary volumes: “The Compilation” and “The Jury Selection”.
