BCO has highlighted the importance of offices across the board, and last night’s awards enabled the sector to celebrate and reinforce the significance of office space on a national sphere. The awards run parallel to a national campaign taking place this week – National Good Office Week (NGOW), which aims to raise debate and awareness on best practise in the office sector.

BCO CELEBRATES OFFICE EXCELLENCE
The British Council for Offices (BCO) last night celebrated the best in office design and fit out at the coveted BCO Awards, which took place last night at the Grosvenor Hotel in central London.
BCO Award’s are recognised as the gold standard for office space and every year attract the cream of UK corporate real estate. This year was no exception. 1,500 guests gathered at the special ceremony to celebrate the very best in the sector. This year the 26 awards spanned a range of sectors from retail to banking and the standard as always was incredibly high.
BCO’s chief executive Richard Kauntze reinforced this message:
“Productivity, happiness and creativity of employees all depend on the quality of the environment in which they work. The BCO awards have created awareness of office workplaces, placing them at the forefront of the publics attention”.
The entries have shown a significant rise in standards and a trend towards creating offices that echo the values of best practice.
With more than 7 million people in the UK working in offices, the BCO awards have inspired owners and developers of office buildings to compete to be the best.
The majority of winners have received top Environmental Assessment ratings (BREEAM) – a standard that is used to measure and assess the environmental performance of both new and existing buildings. Within the UK, BREEAM is regarded as a measurement of quality for best practice in environmental design and management. Reflecting the pressure that government bodies have been putting on the development of buildings to be built with sustainable and environmental objectives.
The winners of last night’s awards therefore not only represent forward thinking, but also encourage environmental credentials, innovative designs and most importantly a better working environment. This reflects the growing perceived importance of Eco-friendly buildings with sustainable credentials.
Chief Executive Richard Kauntze reinforced this notion about the environment commenting:
“We are particularly please with the growing quality of standards. It is important that we showcase the very best as it reflects trends in office demand and supply, which is very valuable for the wider development market to recognise.”
The National Trust won the Innovation Award last night for demonstrating business enterprise and design innovation, by taking a new direction with the new Heelis HQ building. Rather than choosing an established typical country house, the National Trust surprised many figures by seeking better value for money in the former railway town of Swindon. As a result, they have developed a timeless classic that will evolve into a national jewel.
National Good Office Week coincides with the British Council for Offices (BCO) annual awards ceremony on 3rd October, which showcases the very best in office design. Throughout the campaign week the BCO will be launching specific research that will offer an alternative insight into how office environments effect the productivity, profitability and sustainability of offices and office workers. The BCO will also have a range of high-profile speakers available for interview on each day of the campaign week. Each will be an office sector expert and offer opinion on each day’s theme.
National Good Office Week will throw open the debate about the office as a workplace. Targeted at office professionals and corporate organisations the campaign will illustrate how office workers manage, work and perform in office space today and offer businesses opportunity to comment on a variety of aspects of the office environment.
The British Council For Offices was established in 1990 and is Britain’s leading forum for the discussion and debate of issues affecting the office sector. Its members are all organisations involved in creating, acquiring or occupying office space, whether architects, lawyers, surveyors, financial institutions or public agencies. The BCO works to advance the collective understanding of its members, enabling them to work together to create more effective office space.
