The electrically controlled dome is opening up for visitors: In the built installation Skyspace they are are experiencing the interaction between the light of the sky and the light of James Turrell: At 1,800 meters above sea level in the rough mountains of Austria’s Arlberg region. “Questioning perception, seeing or feeling through the eyes,” this is how the American artist outlines the goal of his installations.
Baumschlager Eberle Architekten is the architectural partner of the Skyspace-Lech project. At the Lustenau office, Turrell’s designs were developed to operational construction plans supplemented by many detailed solutions.
One detail shows just how extreme the challenges for the architects were: the dome, weighing 600 kilos only itself, has to bear the burden of 35 tons of snow.
James Turell was highly satisfied with the Baumschlager Eberle Architekten team at Lustenau. They have managed successfully to reconcile the high degree of digitization with the extreme climatic conditions and the beauty of detail.
The project was initiated by the association Horizon Field, it was financed solely by private patrons. The work of Baumschlager Eberle Architekten was the contribution for this challenging project.
