James Bond Mountain-top Filming Location
For architects and those interested in spectacular contemporary architecture one of the highlights of the latest Bond film Spectre was the glassy mountain-top building used as a location for a high-class medical retreat, an Alpine wellness centre – the “futurist hospital where villain Christoph Waltz pursues his devilish plans”.
Austria was the first international filming location in director Sam Mendes’ seven-month shoot, and hosted a number of action sequences between December 2014 and February 2015. The key locations were Lake Altausee, Obertilliach, Kartitsch and, most importantly, a Tyrol ski resort called Sölden, according to www.kftv.com.
Sölden was chosen for the distinctive glass architecture of restaurant Ice Q, and for superb local scenery such as the Rettenbach and Tiefenbach glaciers.
According to www.soelden.com the restaurant opened on the Gaislachkogl in December 2013: “top modern architecture using only local materials, gourmet specialties, suspension bridge to Gaislachkogl peak. In combination with the future-oriented Gaislachkogl mountain gondola, this culinary summit spot stands for a multi-functional and absolute barrier-free gourmet temple at 3048 meters above sea level….an outstanding deluxe restaurant with table service, offering gourmet Alpine Cuisine, excellent wines, 94 seats inside, 34 seats on the terrace and an awe-inspiring rooftop terrace.
The restaurant and the three mountain gondola stations were designed by Obermoser Architect’s Office (Johann Obermoser). “The glass facades open up new perspectives of the stunning Ötztal mountains. The entire building seems to be transparent and fits perfectly into its natural surroundings. Together with the top station of the 3-rope mountain gondola it ranks among Tirol’s undisputed highlights when it comes to architectural masterpieces in ski areas.”
Obertilliach was also used as the setting for a spectacular plane crash stunt that showcases the skills of Spectre’s second unit. At the height of filming, it is estimated that Sölden was hosting 500 people connected to the Spectre shoot.
