Orient Street House in Australia
This new house in South Fremantle, designed by Philip Stejskal Architecture, is a thoughtful reimagining of a site with deep historical roots. Conceived around the remnants of a cottage dating back to 1896, the design breathes new life into the original structure while integrating modern architectural elements. The project pays homage to the past, particularly through the careful restoration of the existing limestone rubble walls, which now serve as the foundation for a contemporary spatial arrangement. These walls not only retain the memory of the original cottage but also anchor the new design in a strong sense of place and history.
The house’s roof and verandah, once simple timber structures typical of cottages from that era, have been reinterpreted in a modern context. A new, exposed timber structure hovers above the historical remains, creating a light and airy atmosphere that contrasts with the solidity of the stone walls below. This timber structure accommodates additional program space on the first floor, offering both functionality and aesthetic continuity. The juxtaposition of old and new materials creates a dialogue between the past and the present, where the original cottage’s spirit remains alive through its integration into the new home.
A restrained material palette defines the project, with masonry, natural timber, metal, and glass used throughout the home. Natural timbers, sometimes stained to bring out their textures, add warmth and contrast to the cool, robust stone and sleek glass elements. This combination of materials creates a layered, tactile environment that feels grounded in its context yet refined in its execution.
The house, completed in 2019, spans 250 square meters on a 474-square-meter site and rises over two levels. The design seamlessly merges the old and new, providing a contemporary living space that respects the site’s heritage while offering a fresh, modern aesthetic. By retaining and reinterpreting the cottage’s historical features, the project demonstrates how architecture can create a meaningful connection between the past and present.
