First Year: Student Projects at Dundee School of Architecture
e-architect are following the progress of Scottish architecture student, Sean Noon during his degree studies at Dundee University.
Project Three
About this semester’s work Sean Noon says:
We have been on 2 modules this semester, the first which involves a hand drawn A1 rendered section and a CAD version of the same piece. I was given the concept for Isaac Newton’s Cenotaph, conceived by Etienne-Louis Boulle. More to come.
The main module is based around designing a simple live/work space for a site in Arbroath, Scotland, for a specific craftsman. The first part of the project was all precedent analysis which involved a trip to Arbroath to check out the sites and gather information etc.
I had imagined my user as being a niche steel and titanium bicycle frame manufacturer so the design and function is based around that. For example I imagined zinc-titanium standing seam cladding for the facade.
Until now it has been a lot of sketching and drawing to scale on detail paper and making scale models, going 2 steps forward and 1 step back and the like, playing around with the light and circulation inside and looking at existing live/work units for small-scale bicycle frame manufacturers, like this project is based on, for different ideas.
You can see some examples of the floor plan/sections etc in the pictures and some spatial models I have experimented with.

Project Two
Module Two is ultimately based around designing a simple bird-hide shelter for an ecology centre in Kinghorn, Fife.
As part of the module, we were asked to create a structure using card or balsa that could support an apple suspended 50cm above and 50cm away from the model base. Pushing away from the simple act of having a counterweight (i.e. like a crane), instead I created the structure (all card and triangular shaped) to displace the apple’s weight back and downwards by itself.

Project One
My first module was a month long series of 3 individual, and 1 group, sub-projects based on mapping movement, space and enclosure.
‘We were asked to map out the movement of a physical activity. I chose my bicycle commute ride from Dundee to St Andrews. From the GPX file from my Garmin device I drew a 3D topographical route.
The next part of the module was creating a model based on the graphic. I used single pieces of card and divided the route into 3 parts. The model is still part of the card, showing development and to enhance how light passes through the model. After a group project involving combining our models, the final part of the module was to abstract models into structures, creating an enclosure, at a 1:50 scale.
I focused on one section of my model and played around with the form to create my final model.’
I’ve also, with the exception of some small detail, completed my A1 Orthographic drawing of the Suleymaniye Mosque in Istanbul.
