Why Regular Exterior Cleaning Matters for Homes in the Seattle and Olympia Area
19 August 2026
Living and working around Olympia and the greater Seattle area, I see the same thing on homes every year. Our wet weather is great for the trees, lawns, and gardens, but it is also hard on siding, roofs, decks, patios, and driveways. The damp seasons give algae, moss, mildew, and grime plenty of time to build up. When those surfaces are left alone too long, a home can start to look older than it really is.
That is one reason exterior cleaning is not just about making a house look nice for the weekend. It is part of regular home care. Just like cleaning gutters or trimming back shrubs, washing the outside of the home helps protect the surfaces that take the most weather.
Driveways are a good example. In our area, concrete and paver driveways often collect dark stains, moss along the edges, and slippery buildup where the sun does not hit. During the rainy months, those spots can get slick. A proper cleaning can remove much of that growth and make the driveway look brighter, safer, and better cared for. It also helps keep dirt from getting tracked into the garage and house.
Siding needs attention too. Vinyl, fiber cement, painted wood, and other exterior materials can all collect green and black streaks over time. Around Seattle and Olympia, shaded sides of the home usually show it first. North-facing walls, areas near trees, and corners with poor airflow are common trouble spots. Gentle washing methods can clean those areas without being too harsh on the surface.
Many homeowners hear the phrase pressure washing and picture a strong blast of water hitting everything at full force. That is not how it should be done. A good exterior cleaning company knows when to use pressure and when to use a softer approach. For siding, trim, and many painted surfaces, soft washing is often the better choice. For concrete, stone, and some hard surfaces, more pressure may be appropriate, but it still needs to be controlled.
Patios, walkways, and pool decks also benefit from regular cleaning. These areas are used for relaxing, grilling, bringing in groceries, and walking around the home. When moss or algae starts to grow, they can become slippery and worn looking. Cleaning them brings back the color of the material and makes the whole yard feel more inviting.
Another benefit is curb appeal. A clean driveway, fresh-looking siding, and washed walkways can change the way a home looks from the street. This matters when you are planning to sell, but it also matters when you simply take pride in your home. In many cases, exterior cleaning is one of the fastest ways to freshen up a property without making a major upgrade.
Timing is important in the Pacific Northwest. Many homeowners like to schedule exterior cleaning in spring after the wet winter months. Others prefer late summer or early fall before the rain settles back in. Both can make sense. The best schedule depends on tree cover, shade, the type of siding, and how quickly buildup returns around your home.
It is also worth mentioning that not every job is a do-it-yourself job. Store-bought machines can help with small tasks, but they can also damage siding, wood, mortar, paint, and even concrete if used the wrong way. Water can be forced behind siding or into gaps where it should not go. That is why technique matters as much as the equipment.
For homeowners in Olympia, Seattle, and the surrounding communities, regular exterior cleaning is a simple way to protect the home and keep it looking cared for. From driveways and walkways to siding, patios, decks, and outdoor living areas, the outside of your home deals with a lot of moisture through the year. Keeping those surfaces clean helps them last longer and makes the property more enjoyable to come home to.
When the green stains, dark streaks, or slippery spots start showing up, it may be time to look into professional power washing. A careful cleaning can make a big difference without changing anything about the home itself.
