4x revolutionary home design products you should know about

20 November 2024

The way we are building and designing our homes had changed drastically in the last few years. With new innovations and sustainable materials, our homes are becoming smarter and more efficient than ever before.

The main factor behind this, are the innovative products that have been brought to the market. In this article, we will discuss these products.

home acoustic slat wall panels

Acoustic walls

One of these newer products, are acoustic wall panels. Acoustic panels are large, soft panels placed in rooms to improve sound by absorbing echoes and reflected sounds. They can be made from materials like foam with fabric, eco-friendly PET felt, wood wool, or natural elements like cork or moss.

The main purpose is to reduce the sounds in a room. When placed properly, they soften sounds that bounces off the walls. This is especially beneficial in crowded areas where a lack of loud noises is important, such as a (home)office.

Smart building materials

The construction industry has also gone through quite some changes. A more recent discovery is self-healing concrete. This cement-based material can seal cracks by itself with use of chemical products within the concrete, as well as rainwater and carbon dioxide (provided by air).

Another revolutionary building material is ALON. ALON is another name for transparent aluminium oxide and offers the transparency of glass, but with three times the strength of steel. Because of this, it could be a great alternative to normal glass, resulting is much more durability, less maintenance, and thus much more sustainable in the long run as compared to glass.

Sustainable solutions for energy-use

At this point, almost everybody is aware of the smart systems which can help with handling energy-use in a more sustainable way. However, there has also been a rise in smart materials, which can help in countering temperature fluctuations and reducing energy consumption.

One of these materials are Phase-change materials, which can be integrated into walls and release thermal energy. This might help in maintaining a more consistent indoor temperature, although research is still done on how to effectively manage these techniques.

Plants on the wall

Nowadays, living wall systems are more frequently used. These living wall systems, also called biophilic designs, bring nature indoors, but can also be used on the outside of a house. A living wall system is a vertical wall with plants.

The walls are not only visually pleasing, but also help in controlling temperature and thus reducing energy costs, purifying the air, promoting biodiversity and reduce noise levels. Combining a living wall system with acoustic wall could therefore create a perfect setting for an office: the purified air and reduced noise can greatly benefit efficiency at the workplace.
