Playable Architecture Is on the Rise and Leading to Some Excellent Innovations

In today’s world, people seek interactivity in everything they do. They want to feel a part of something rather than simply a passive observer. Great architecture has always been there to admire, rather than to get actively involved in, but could this be starting to change?

There has been a recent rise in playable architecture, where places are designed to be explored and interacted with. This is leading to some excellent innovations and appeals to modern audiences who value interactive experiences.

Architecture is Beginning to Draw Inspiration from Online Entertainment

Part of the reason for the shift towards playable architecture in public spaces could be because of the booming online entertainment industry, where people have a wide range of engaging options to choose from across a variety of platforms. Even today’s television options can be interactive, with some offerings giving viewers the chance to choose the direction of the story.

The growing interactivity across the industry can be compared to playable architecture, which is designed to be accessible but interactive. This gamified artwork is also supposed to encourage tolerance and unity in an ethnically diverse community.

There’s also the High Line in New York, which is hugely popular with visitors and locals in the city. It’s built on an elevated rail line and acts as a guided journey around various art exhibits and gardens.

Movement and Interaction Are Driving Design Innovation

Along with the rise of online entertainment, there has been a greater push towards movement and fitness in recent years. Initiatives aim to encourage people to spend more time outside and away from screens. This generation has been referred to as the healthiest ever, and architects are now adapting to this reality and designing spaces to suit an active population.

The Musical Swings art installation is one example of this. They’re standard swings, but they play music when they move, making them interactive. They’re designed to bring people together as they enjoy the swings next to one another. Currently, this is a touring installation, but it could inspire permanent developments in busy locations.

Numerous other installations around Europe that have been created to encourage new ways of moving. Gondwana in Terni turned the main town square into a dynamic stage, with various wooden blocks of different sizes. There is also Wunderbugs in Rome, which has sensors to monitor insect and human visitor patterns to create musical compositions.

Architects working on projects for local governments should take inspiration from some of these highly innovative and interactive creations from around the world. There’s a shift towards architecture that involves people and encourages them to experience it in different ways, a shift that’s representative of wider societal changes.
