Planning to Buy a Lawn Mower? Here’s What to Look For

If you are in the market for a new lawnmower, the selections can become a bit overwhelming. With so many options to choose from, and with so many different types of lawnmowers available, how do you choose which one to purchase?

When you start shopping for a lawnmower, here are some considerations to take to ensure you are making the right choice and getting the best bang for your buck.

1. A Riding Lawn Mower or Push Mowers

When you first consider which lawn mower to buy, you need to consider the area you are going to be mowing. If you have a farm or acreage, you may be interested in purchasing a riding mower. These are a great choice if you need to mow large areas at once, and want to save time and physical effort.

If you live in the city, with limited storage space and don’t have a lot to mow, the expense and hassle of a riding mower might not be for you.

Consider how much area you need to mow and make sure that the mower you are going to purchase can handle the area you are intending to use it in.

2. Power Supply Type

If you aren’t buying a riding mower, and are looking for a lawnmower only for your front and backyards then you have to decide which power supply and availability to purchase. There are 3 types of lawn mowers you can purchase, each with pros and cons.

Electric Corded Mower

An electric mower will have an extension cord, but will also never lose battery life. If you have a larger yard or want more power and less expense, an electric mower can be a good choice for you.

While you will have to navigate around the cord, these mowers are generally a good investment and will allow you to get the job done.

Battery-Powered Mower

Battery-powered mowers are great for small areas, but they can be detrimental if you need power, to cut through long grass, or handle larger areas.

Battery packs need to be charged for these mowers, and if you forget to charge them you can be waiting to complete your work. Battery Powered motors will normally be quiet lawn mowers and can be a great option if you are looking to mow in the early morning, or have quite a few neighbors. But the battery life is the downside to these mowers, as the power and time, you can use them depend solely on their battery systems.

These are good options for smaller houses and yards, but probably not the best way to go when looking for power and a mower to use for long periods each day.

Gas-Powered Mowers

Gas-powered mowers will generally be the more powerful option available. Their engines normally come with a bit more punch, and they can keep going until the gas runs out.

The cons of these mowers are, well, the gas! You will have to ensure you have a jerry can of gas available should the mower run out. If you are an environmentally conscious person, you may not want to purchase these motors due to their need for gas.

Gas mowers are more often heavy-duty, meant for longer and harder grass to cut. There are no cords, and they are very powerful, but the maintenance on the engines is a bit more involved, and the constant need for fuel can be frustrating sometimes.

3. Mower Accessories and Capabilities

Once you have decided on the size and power type of your mower, the next consideration to make is in regards to the options on the mower, such as bagging accessories.

If you are wanting to have all your clippings collected, you need to make sure you get a bagging mower. This option allows the grass to go directly into a bag and allows for easy transportation to the curbside for the garbage collectors.

If you don’t want to have to rake, and would rather just mow and let the clippings fall, grasscycling could be a great choice for you, and this will affect the decision you make in regard to purchasing your mower.

No matter what style, power, or size of mower you choose, there are many options available with differing price tags, and you are sure to find one within your budget.

Don’t go to the store without first deciding the specifics of your lawnmower, or you may find yourself purchasing a mower that is not powerful enough, or that is overly equipped for the job you need it to do. Once you have the specifications in mind, go ahead and test the feel of the mowers and decide on the one that suits your comfort and price range.
