Physical placement drives most of the retrofit-specific decisions. Duct-mounted units need enough straight duct run and clearance for the emitter assembly and access panel, which isn’t always available in older mechanical rooms built before IAQ equipment was part of the design. For large air handlers, coil-mounted ionization is typically applied at the coil face or immediately downstream, positioned to distribute evenly across the coil rather than concentrated in one section. Uneven ion distribution across a large coil reduces the practical benefit of the installation even if the unit itself performs well in isolation.

Power and control integration also need early attention on a retrofit. Confirm whether the unit needs a dedicated circuit or can tie into existing controls, and whether the building automation system needs any interlock with fan operation. None of this is complicated, but it’s the kind of detail that turns into a change order if it’s discovered mid-installation instead of during the walkthrough.

The choice between in-duct ionization and a standalone, room-level air purifier usually comes down to what the building already has rather than which category is inherently better. In-duct systems work with the existing HVAC distribution, treating air as it moves through the ductwork and reaching every space served by that system without adding a floor-standing unit to each room. Standalone purifiers make more sense in single rooms with no ductwork access, spaces on a different HVAC zone than the rest of the building, or situations where a fast, temporary solution is needed without touching the mechanical system at all. For most commercial retrofits with existing ductwork already in place, in-duct ionization is the lower-friction path since it uses infrastructure that’s already there instead of adding standalone equipment room by room.
