Cantina Sanabria Restaurant, Buenos Aires, Argentina

Cantina Sanabria was conceived as a contemporary reinterpretation of the traditional cantina, understood not only as a gastronomic space but as a place for gathering, lingering, and everyday ritual. The project seeks to recover that close, neighborhood spirit and translate it into a contemporary language, where architecture supports the experience without imposing itself.

From the façade, the venue establishes a direct dialogue with the street. Visual openness, outdoor tables, and restrained graphics invite people in, blurring the boundary between the public realm and the interior. The entrance acts as a threshold that anticipates the atmosphere within: warm, honest, and understated.

The spatial proposal is organized through a clear and functional layout, where each area plays a specific role within a continuous experience. The main dining room is conceived as a flexible space, designed to accommodate different moments of the day, with a furniture arrangement that encourages both social interaction and the intimacy of each table.

The visual connection to the kitchen, mediated by textured glass panels, reinforces the idea of transparency and closeness, allowing the movement and dynamics of the kitchen to be perceived without disrupting the diner’s experience.

Materiality plays a central role in shaping the atmosphere. Natural wood, used in wall finishes and furniture, brings warmth and evokes tradition, while black metalwork and amber-tinted ribbed glass introduce a more contemporary and refined reading. This combination creates a balance between the classic and the modern, avoiding literal nostalgia and instead embracing a timeless aesthetic.

Lighting was designed as a fundamental tool for shaping the space. Warm, focused, and carefully distributed light guides circulation and highlights the tables, creating intimate zones within an open dining room. During the day, natural light filters through the glazed enclosures, adding depth and subtle variations throughout the day.

The furniture, defined by simple lines and balanced proportions, was selected to reinforce the idea of permanence and everyday use. Tables, chairs, and benches dialogue with the architecture without competing with it, prioritizing comfort and durability.

Details—from tableware to graphic elements—complete a cohesive narrative in which every decision contributes to a holistic experience.

Cantina Sanabria is thus conceived as a space that celebrates the essential: shared meals, extended conversations, and neighborhood identity. Architecture does not seek to take center stage, but rather to act as a sensitive framework that enhances the culinary proposal and reinforces its character. The result is an authentic and welcoming place, where tradition and contemporaneity coexist in balance, creating an experience that goes beyond function to become memory and habit.
