The Place at Fifth + Broadway, Nashville Tennessee
The Place at Fifth + Broadway is a 34-story, 387-unit residential building at the west end of the Fifth + Broadway development in the heart of Nashville, Tennessee. The rehabilitated city block replaces the city’s former convention center with new state-of-the-art facilities that seeks to invigorate downtown Nashville and underline the city’s vibrant culture renowned for live music, honky-tonks, and nightlife.
The Fifth + Broadway master plan includes the residential tower, an office building, retail, restaurants, and entertainment components, organized along an L-shaped internal alleyway that weaves through the city block. Alleys tucked away from main streets that provide intimate retail and dining experiences are a part of Nashville’s unique streetscape. The right-angled corridor inside the Fifth + Broadway development recreates the pedestrian-friendly experiences of these narrow alleys, which serves as a key element in the design of the apartment building and a defining theme throughout the mall.
The building’s podium is stylishly articulated to complement the site’s historic urban context – the brick-clad exterior conveying a sense of permanence and age. In contrast, the apartment tower’s modern, grey glass volume is designed to stand out as a recognizable feature in the city’s skyline.
Describe the main design ideas behind the building
The design of The Place at Fifth + Broadway focuses around two clear volumes influenced by Nashville’s architectural precedents and the city’s urban lifestyle. With the timeless architectural language of the building’s base paired with a sleek, elegant tower above, the building’s design represents an artful combination of traditional and modern.
A loft-like brick base podium embraces the historical aesthetic values found on Broadway. The iconic main street full of legacy bars and local favorite restaurants in Nashville forms a street wall of mostly low-rise buildings comprising mixed brick and terra-cotta details. The base of the residential tower emulates these traditional building features in a continuation of the pedestrian experience along the street.
While the podium is a visually heavier masonry block that melds into the existing streetscape, the tower is a dazzling contrast that seems to lightly float atop its base. Tying the two masses together is a repeating grid pattern that echos the structural grid of the podium. The apartment tower’s modern glass volume is overlaid by a black aluminum grid designed to anchor the tower to its base and accentuate the building’s form, making it both legible and distinct from the surrounding structures.
The spatial configuration inside the building takes its cues from the programming of the larger Fifth + Broadway development. The outdoor alleys are designed to feel compact and crowded, and this spatial compression creates an intimate setting that drives human interaction. The heightened energy, as a result, makes the space feel alive. This impression is recreated inside the residential building with various private and semi-private spaces organized along a central circulation path. Every nook and cranny is an opportunity for different textures and experiences that mirror Fifth + Broadway’s eclectic combination outdoors.
