San Diego Coronado Bridge, California – Lighting Contest Winners

An international team led by London based artist Peter Fink (Form Associates) and lighting designer Mark Major (Speirs + Major) in association with Buro Happold in Los Angeles has been announced as the winner of the largest interactive green energy lighting project in North America. The San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge, built in 1969 in the spectacular context of the bay, has become a symbol of the San Diego area.

Manhattan Bridge, New York, NY

The Manhattan Bridge, the youngest of the four East River Bridges, celebrated its 100th birthday in 2009. While the youngest of the East River Bridges, the Manhattan Bridge has long experienced problems of aging due to its design. Essentially “under built”, the 1,470 foot suspension bridge consists of four main cables draped over two, sleek piers. The designer, Leon Moisseiff, assumed that the inherent structure of suspension bridges made them stronger and decided as a result not to use stiffening trusses like those used, for example, on the Williamsburg Bridge (opened in 1903).
