Mars House, Ontario
Mars House is a thoughtfully designed residential project that emerged in response to the changing demands of modern living, particularly during the pandemic. As people’s lives shifted, so did their need for functional and flexible spaces. Mars House was meticulously crafted to cater to the evolving needs of a small family while providing a serene escape from the busy urban environment.
Externally, Mars House is composed of a series of interlocking volumes that create a visually striking, yet harmonious, architectural presence. The upper storeys are set back to offer a gentle transition from street level, contributing to the house’s balanced proportions. The façade is clad in a rhythmically patterned black metal, which contrasts beautifully with warm wood siding and elegant porcelain slabs. This combination of materials not only enhances the visual appeal but also adds depth and texture to the exterior, making the home stand out in its urban setting.
One of the standout features of Mars House is its unique split-level layout. This design was driven by the client’s request for an indoor basketball court with 18-foot ceilings, resulting in a dynamic yet cohesive arrangement of spaces. Each level of the house is thoughtfully designated for specific daily activities, with a focus on maximizing efficiency. Formal living and dining rooms were intentionally excluded from the plan, allowing for a more flexible and fully utilized layout where every area serves a practical purpose.
Natural light plays a key role in the design of Mars House. Large, strategically placed windows and skylights allow sunlight to filter throughout the interior, creating bright and inviting spaces. Expansive glazing and oversized sliding doors seamlessly connect the kitchen and dining areas to a spacious outdoor deck, blending indoor and outdoor living. The interiors are characterized by clean, modern lines paired with warm wood accents and natural tones, striking a perfect balance between contemporary design and a welcoming, cozy atmosphere.
With a total size of 3,700 square feet spread across three levels, Mars House offers a harmonious blend of functionality, comfort, and modern aesthetics. It serves as a tranquil family retreat while meeting the demands of an active, multi-functional lifestyle.
