Founded in 1995 by Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa, SANAA has evolved from a small Japanese partnership into one of the world’s most influential contemporary architectural practices. Based in Tokyo, the studio is internationally recognised for its light, elegant and innovative architecture, characterised by spatial clarity, transparency and a seamless relationship between buildings, landscape and public life.
The work of SANAA is distinguished by its restrained material palette, fluid planning and subtle manipulation of light, creating architecture that appears effortless while responding thoughtfully to its cultural and environmental context. Sejima and Nishizawa consistently challenge conventional notions of enclosure and circulation, producing buildings that encourage openness, interaction and discovery.
The practice gained worldwide recognition through projects including the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa, Japan, the Glass Pavilion at the Toledo Museum of Art in Ohio, the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York, and the Dior Omotesando flagship in Tokyo. More recent landmark works include the Rolex Learning Center in Lausanne, Switzerland, and the Louvre-Lens Museum in northern France.
In recognition of their outstanding contribution to contemporary architecture, Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa were jointly awarded the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2010. Today, SANAA continues to shape the global architectural landscape through projects that combine conceptual clarity, technical precision and an enduring sense of lightness.
