Swedbank International Headquarters Building
3XN completes 45.000 m2 office building in Stockholm
Today a new 3XN designed headquarters for Swedbank is inaugurated. Through an innovative and powerful design, a new landmark amongst Swedish office buildings emerges.
An estimated 2,500 employees will move into the new 45,000 m2 headquarters in the Stockholm suburb of Sundbyberg, 5 kilometers from the city center. The new Swedbank HQ will be one of Sweden’s most modern and innovative office buildings, focusing on Scandinavian simplicity, transparency and dynamic social environments.
The design springs from Swedbank’s core values: openness, simplicity, care and durability. Thus, the architecture is based directly on the organization’s profile as a solid, financially sound and modern bank, interpreted through 3XN’s philosophy on behaviour and architecture.
3XN’s Principal and Creative Director, Kim Herforth Nielsen, explains: ‘The building is conceived and designed from the inside out. We have literally translated Swedbank’s core values into the creation of a modern and groundbreaking head office. Swedbank has conveyed the importance it places on creating an open social environment, which happens to coincide with 3XN’s design beliefs and ideology. It has been an extremely interesting process and we are very proud of the result.’
Architecture that facilitates interaction and visual contact
With its innovative and transparent expression formed in an unconventional triple-v structure the building will become a landmark amongst Swedish office buildings. The large volume required has been broken down to create spaces on a human scale. This makes the building inviting on the inside as well as on the outside.
‘First and foremost the triple-v solution means that the employees are located closer to each other on undisturbed working islands than in a traditional office wing. This contributes to shorter distances, good internal communication, visual contact and knowledge sharing between departments,’ Kim Herforth Nielsen says.
The implementation of an open plan office, and thus a new type of work culture and work identity, has been integrated into the architectural design and the main idea behind the building.
The two lower floors contain a restaurant, conference facilities and a receptions area. Their open glass facades emphasize their semi-public functions and Swedbank’s openness to its surroundings. This results in a building and a bank that will be an active and valuable contribution to the area and its residents.
The new headquarters is also the result of fruitful cooperation between 3XN and developer Humlegaarden Fastigheder, who are the client of the project.
‘It is a privilege to work for such a professional client as Humlegården Fastigheter. They have had confidence in 3XN and our architectural vision throughout the process, allowing the ideal environment to create a satisfying result for all parties involved,’ Kim Herforth Nielsen says.
3XN in Sweden: 3XN are working on several projects in Sweden, including the new Central Station Stockholm Continental. 3XN opened a Swedish office in Stockholm in 2013.

Swedbank International Headquarters Design
3XN is to design Swedbank’s New International Headquarters
The new Headquarters will be one of Sweden’s most modern and innovative office buildings – focusing on transparency, Scandinavian simplicity and dynamic social environments. Behind the project is the Danish Architect 3XN in collaboration with Humlegården Fastigheter, representing the property owner Länsförsäkringar Liv.
By the end of 2013 no less than 2.500 co-workers will move into the innovative building at Sundbyberg Stad near Stockholm. The Headquarters is designed by the Danish studio 3XN with direct reference to Swedbank’s core values; openness, simplicity, care and durability.
3XN’s Principal Kim Herforth Nielsen explains:
– The building is conceived and designed from the inside out. We have literally translated Swedbank’s core values into the creation of a modern and groundbreaking head office. Swedbank has conveyed the importance it places on creating an open social environment, which happens to coincide with 3XNs design beliefs and ideology. It has been a very interesting process and we look forward to getting to work on the project.
With its innovative and transparent expression formed in an unconventional triple-v structure the building will become a landmark among Swedish office buildings. The large volume is broken up to create spaces on a human scale. This makes the building inviting on the inside as well as on the outside.
The new head office is situated at Sundbyberg; a rapidly developing and dynamic traffic centre five kilometers outside the centre of Stockholm. 3XN is currently working on a number of other projects in and around Stockholm:
– At the moment there is a really good energy in the Swedish building industry. We can also feel a great interest for Danish architecture as we are building a high rise residential building in Vällingby and we have other exciting projects on the way, says Kim Herforth Nielsen of 3XN.
The construction of Swedbank’s new head office is expected to be finished by the end of 2013.
