Shanghai expo 2010 Italian pavilion (competition project)
The pavilion building’s dynamic shape represents italian innovation and fantasy, meanwhile the better city – better life theme is represented trough the main features of italian urban quality.
Pavilion’s structure, raised up from the ground, is the metaphor of a flying bird. The surface is shaped in accord to a warped geometry, the same of many living creatures as leafs and animals. The pavilion is suspended upon a white platform surrounded by water pools, and represents a specific italian quality: lightness, intended by Italo Calvino as agility, elegance, soar.
The structure is in steel to grant the precision of a prefabricated assembling system which will have as result an easy and economic construction. Three columns with stairs and services are going to support an horizontal structure with suspended floors. There will be no other structural parts, in order to obtain an internal space entirely opened and free.
Under the pavilion a space similar to the Italian square is provided, protected by the sun, refreshed by the water, opened to the surroundings. Here, a circular island will host different kind of shows.
Inside the pavilion nature and city are integrated as it uniquely happens in Italian cities. The first floor is covered with a grass surface and the three columns are the metaphor of city buildings.
