PENINSULA SHANGHAI HOTEL & APARTMENTS TOPS OUT
Luxury Hotel Rising along the Historic Bund
New York, NY– A topping out ceremony for the new Peninsula Shanghai Hotel & Apartments was held on April 2008.
BBG-BBGM is the design architect for The Peninsula Shanghai Hotel & Apartments located in the newly-redeveloped Waitanyuan neighborhood on Shanghai’s historic Bund with superior scenic views of the Huangpu River, Pudong, and the Gardens of the former British Consulate. The hotel is expected to be completed in the fall of 2009 and is the only new-build development on the Bund, Shanghai’s iconic sweep of historic buildings.
“As design architects of The Peninsula Shanghai, we are proud of reaching this significant milestone of what will become an iconic landmark hotel with 21st Century amenities amongst the Bund’s magnificent classic buildings,” said Louis R. Hedgecock, AIA, BBG-BBGM’s managing partner.
This mixed-use project consists of a Peninsula hotel of approximately 235 guestrooms and suites, high-end retail space, and 39 luxury residential units. Some of the amenities include The Peninsula’s trademark double-height lobby, a grand ballroom and meeting complex, a luxurious spa and swimming pool with views onto the adjacent park, and five food and beverage outlets including a ground-floor bar, a jazz lounge, a signature Chinese restaurant, and a rooftop restaurant and bar overlooking the Bund.
Under the design leadership of BBG-BBGM’s founding partner David Beer, the architectural design combines traditional elements, such as art-deco detailing and contextual scale with harmonious materials – bronze and granite – that respect and reflect the historic architecture of the prestigious landmark neighborhood, with a contemporary flair. Designed as a modern urban resort with state-of-the-art amenities, The Peninsula continues to adhere to classic traditions, resulting in a seamless combination of luxury and modern convenience. BBG-BBGM has worked with The Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels, Limited over many years, having provided design services for award-winning Peninsulas in Bangkok, Hong Kong, New York, and Tokyo.
The Peninsula Shanghai will be the ninth property in The Peninsula’s portfolio, marking the return of The Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels Limited., the owning company of The Peninsula Hotels – Asia’s oldest hotel company, to its first home. The Peninsula Hotels encompass eight award-winning properties in Hong Kong (1928), Manila (1976), New York (1988), Beijing (1989), Beverly Hills (1991), Bangkok (1999), Chicago (2001) and Tokyo (2007).
