Minister for Housing and Welfare presents the 2013 Housing Design Accolades

Saltire Society Housing Design Awards Guest Chair Lesley Riddoch today announced the 76th Saltire Society Housing Design Awards with Margaret Burgess, Minister for Housing and Welfare presenting the Awards at a ceremony in Glasgow. The Awards reward and advocate innovation and excellence in Scottish house building and place-making.

From a diverse shortlist of projects – described by Lesley Riddoch as ‘herculean efforts to create real homes not just four walls and a roof’, the judging panel awarded three awards, three high commendations and two commendations.

The coveted Saltire Medal, for the Guest Chair’s favourite projects was awarded to Artist Residence, a project in Perth which saw artist Arthur Watson and architect Fergus Purdie work collaboratively to create an idiosyncratic live-work environment within a tight, vacant plot in Perth town centre.

Nord Architecture took home the second award for Westbourne Drive in Bearsden, where client and architect have transformed a suburban house in Bearsden, Glasgow creating a light and airy interior with a sophisticated, balanced exterior.

The third and final award was presented to Chambers McMillan Architects for their family designed home that creates an entirely stair-free, spatially exciting and joyful home for all, nestled comfortably in its compact mews site in Portobello town centre.

The South Seeds Energy Snapshot project aimed to take an innovative and strategic approach to improving the energy efficiency of the housing stock in the Southside of Glasgow with a hope that it would develop an inexpensive approach, which other community groups tackling energy efficiency could replicate.

Saltire International Student Travel Bursary
An Award to the value of £1500 was made to:

– Anna Barbieri, Andy Casey, Chloe Fawcett and Sniedze Riekstina from the Glasgow School of Art for their group project ‘Woodlands Densified’, a housing project proposing a strategic regeneration of Glasgow’s tenement courtyards, illustrated by a prototype situated along Woodlands Road in Glasgow.

Celebrating both the Saltire medal and Awarded schemes Lesley Riddoch said: The imagination, care and expertise that has gone into the work of the winning and commended awards is apparent. From large scale housing developments to unique and distinctive single homes we have been excited to see housing design in Scotland at its best in the Saltire awards.

Panel Convener Jude Barber said:
‘The housing award winners each address an owner’s particular housing need through skillful handling of place, light and volume. The artist residence goes beyond its creative live-work ambitions to generously provide an on-street gallery and communal rear backcourt for other residents. The Ramp house is a joyful family home, which addresses the daughter’s physical needs in a spatially imaginative way. Westourne Drive skillfully transforms the interior and exterior of an existing suburban house to allow owners to remain in their family home. The Innovation Award to South Seeds for their Energy Snapshot Report demonstrates how a grass roots community group is seeking ways in which to harness energy within existing housing stock for the benefit of local residents in an inner city area of Glasgow.

This inaugural Student Travel Bursary is granted through the generous sponsorship of the British Council Scotland.

An exhibition of the shortlisted projects for the Housing Awards, Innovation Award and Student Travel Bursary can also be viewed from 4th September until 16th October 2013 at Architecture and Scotland, Level 2, the Lighthouse.

Saltire Society Housing Design Awards 2013 Launched

The Saltire Society has launched its annual Housing Design Awards with the news that renowned Scottish Broadcaster and journalist Lesley Riddoch will be the awards’ guest chair for 2013.

Ms Riddoch succeeds high-profile Scottish architects Dick Cannon, John McAslan and Malcolm Fraser to the post, which will see her chair the Society’s panel of industry leaders in their assessment of housing projects from all over Scotland.

The role will also allow Ms Riddoch to award the Society’s prestigious Saltire Medal to her favourite scheme from the 2013 submissions. Last year’s winners were the Dualchas Architects, for a portfolio of excellent work through the year.

Ms Riddoch said of her taking up the role: “There’s no more important influence in our lives than the homes we inhabit and the buildings we work in or visit. They create comfort or distress, health or harm and delight or disappoint on a daily basis. These days great design demands great awareness of the way people really use space. And design covers everything from large tenant-led retro-fitting projects to the tiniest eco-home construction and all points in between. So I’m delighted to be involved with the Saltire Housing Design Awards 2013.”

The Society also announced that Jude Barber, Director of Collective Architecture has taken on the convenership of the awards this year, succeeding Jane Paterson, who remains on the judging panel.

The work of Collective Architecture has been recognised by the Saltire Society and housing awards, with the practice’s Byron Street housing development recently featured as one of 12 exemplar-housing projects as part of The Architects Journal’s ‘More Homes Better Homes’ campaign.

Welcoming Lesley Riddoch to the annual chair, Jude Barber said:
‘We are delighted to welcome Lesley as Chair to the Panel. Lesley is a prestigious journalist and broadcaster and well versed in the important role that housing plays in Scotland’s cultural life and landscape.’

‘In additional to the building awards we would urge all clients, academics, tenants groups, architects and housing developers to submit projects (whether built or in progress) for the ‘Innovation in Housing Award’, which celebrates projects that identify original thinking and imagination in housing design and development in Scotland.’

Entries are invited for the awards from all over Scotland, and for projects of all scales and intentions. The panel has previously awarded everything from single dwellings in the remotest reaches of the Highlands, to multi-unit developments in the country’s metropolitan centres.

We believe we have an important and unique role to play, as an independent advocate and celebrant of all that is good and important about our cultural lives and achievements. We are working hard to refresh our work fit for changing times. The Society has played a crucial role over the last seventy five years, at times as a lone voice, in recognising our cultural achievement. And while times have changed the need for that independent voice remains.

Scottish Minister Presents Bumper 75th Saltire Housing Awards – Dualchas Scoop Medal

After receiving one of the largest submissions in its history, the Saltire Society has unveiled its 75th annual Housing Design Awards at a high-profile ceremony in Edinburgh today, with Scottish Minister for Housing and Transport, Keith Brown MSP, presenting the coveted gongs.

From a diverse shortlist of projects – described by Guest Chair Dick Cannon as ‘beautifully conceived and executed’ – the judging panel awarded no fewer than 14 projects, whilst commending a further 4; an unprecedented result for the scheme, and signposting an exciting period in Scottish housing design.

It was a very good afternoon for designers from Skye, with Dualchas Architects picking up the coveted Saltire Medal and cash prize for their two awarded projects; and previous Saltire Medal winners Rural Design also taking home a category award, and the 2nd ever Innovation in Housing Award and cash prize.

Reiach and Hall and Studio KAP took home two awards each in the Alterations, Renovations, and Extensions category, with projects as far afield as Shetland and the Isle of Lewis also picking up awards in the three other main awards categories.

Summing up what has been a superlative year for the awards, Panel Convenor Jane Paterson said:

‘The 2012 Awards are widely spread geographically and I am very encouraged that high quality architecture, engaged clients and willing contractors exist in so many different locations throughout Scotland. This year has been a particularly rewarding experience for members of the judging panel who have had the opportunity to visit some of the Scotland’s best homes’.

The Saltire Society is an independent promoter of Scottish heritage, nurturing, supporting and celebrating Scotland’s diverse creativity. Its Housing Design Awards were created in 1937 to promote and reward innovation in the creation of Scotland’s housing stock and urban residential spaces.

‘Cannon Lauds Exciting 75th Saltire Housing Shortlist’

Leading Scottish Architect Dick Cannon has praised the quality of this year’s Saltire Society Housing Design Awards, for which he is the third annual guest chair, with The Society also reporting one of the largest and most widespread submissions in the scheme’s history.

After sifting through nearly 70 entries from virtually every geographical region and built environment in Scotland, Mr Cannon and the awards panel have chosen a compelling shortlist for the main awards; composed of some of the most dynamic and challenging housing projects recently completed in the country.

The shortlist sees several projects and practices already boasting awards and commendations going head-to-head for one of the Society’s distinctive plaques, with Mr Cannon – who succeeded fellow celebrated Scottish architects Malcolm Fraser and John McAslan to Chair the panel this year – highlighting some of the exceptional quality on offer.

Mr Cannon said: ‘The shortlisted buildings are a rich variety of beautifully conceived and executed projects covering all of the regions of Scotland, which tackle the challenges of boosting local economies, carbon reduction, inner city innovation, reuse and adaptation and which demonstrate that design quality remains high in spite of the economic conditions.

The volume and quality seen in the original submission, is reflected in the large shortlist we have selected, and shows that respect is rightly high for the Saltire Awards.’

Awards panel Convener Jane Paterson also welcomed the shortlist, in what is her first year in the role:
‘The projects we selected for shortlisting provided exemplary contextual responses to their environments and innovative solutions to their clients’ briefs. The shortlist represents a wide range of site conditions, some very challenging.

Some projects have exceptional sites, surely one of Scotland’s assets. The shortlist is diverse geographically, architecturally and in terms of scale. We believe it represents emerging quintessential qualities in contemporary Scottish architecture.’

Dick Cannon to Chair 75th Saltire Housing Design Awards

The Saltire Society has today launched its 75th annual Housing Design Awards with the news that renowned Scottish Architect Dick Cannon will be the awards’ guest chair for 2012.

Mr Cannon succeeds fellow high-profile Scottish architects John McAslan and Malcolm Fraser to the post, which will see him chair the Society’s panel of industry leaders in their assessment of housing projects from all over Scotland.

The role will also allow Mr Cannon to award the Society’s prestigious Saltire Medal to his favourite scheme from the 2012 submissions; the year after Elder & Cannon – the practice co-founded by Mr Cannon in 1980 – received only the second-ever Saltire Medal for their ‘Botany Phase-One’ project In Glasgow’s Maryhill.

Mr Cannon said of his taking up the role: “I am honoured to have been asked to chair these awards, which are highly respected and recognised as a measure of real achievement throughout the architectural community in Scotland. The awards are an important vehicle for showcasing the work of which we Architects and House-Builders are most proud, but more importantly they present an opportunity for the industry at large to consider how to turn the debate on design quality into reality, and produce beautiful homes and environments”.

The Society also announced that Jane Paterson is set to become the new convenor of the awards this year, succeeding Simon Winstanley, who remains on the judging panel.

Jane has not only been recognised by the Saltire Society in previous housing awards schemes, but also picked up a RIBA Award with Paterson Architects for their ‘House on the Hill’ in Aberdeenshire in 2010.

“As a member of the Saltire Society’s judging panel for the last 3 years, I have visited a number of Elder and Cannon’s residential projects. These projects have never disappointed the panel on any level; therefore it is with the greatest professional admiration that we have invited Dick Cannon to be this year’s guest chair.”

Saltire Awards 2011 Winners

A strong showing this year from the Glasgow area, with 8 projects shortlisted out of a total of 17. Edinburgh only has two projects in the running, or 3 if you include the generic ANABO concept of Andrew Stoane Architects. Due to the Scotland’s Housing Expo Inverness matches Edinburgh with two. The remaining projects are scattered around the Scottish countryside, with none in Aberdeen, Dundee or Stirling.

It is worrying that these three Scottish cities don’t have buildings of sufficient quality to make the shortlist never mind win!

Clearly there is a creative energy in Glasgow and in Edinburgh which provides a critical mass that delivers good innovative architecture. But if government policy over the last decade or so had been more supportive of good quality architecture then we wouldn’t be in this situation. Why? Because publicly-procured buildings – notably housing when thinking of the Saltire Society Housing Design Awards (but also such as hospitals and schools) across the country would be consistently of better quality and would therefore iron out any geographical groupings of good design.

So what gives me hope? Of course beauty is welcome – notably the White House in Coll and Craignish – but ANABO and The Glasgow House are the ones that really stand out in that the prototype label suggests a more powerful positive effect can result compared to the others. I use the word hope on purpose because so far not many have emerged! But it is a brave route to pursue, so although I congratulate all shortlisted architects, I salute those courageous enough to try to develop prototype architecture within Scotland’s currently unsupportive environment.
