Developer: Saudi Binladin Company, one of the largest construction firms in the Arab world. Saudi Binladin Company oversaw the expansion of the holy mosques in Mecca and Medina. The company was set up by Mohammed bin Laden.
Raffles Mecca due to open in April 2010.
Around 4 million people visit Mecca (also known as Makkah al Mukarrama) for hajj, with millions more passing through the rest of the year to perform the lesser pilgrimage. Mecca’s Grand Mosque contains the Kaaba, a large stone cube – a single room with a marble floor, 60 ft high and in plan. The Qur’an says that Ibrahim and his son Ishmael were the founders of the Kaaba, building the shrine dedicated to the worship of Allah. Mecca’s redevelopment has recently been compared to Dubai’s and there are concerns the character is being changed too rapidly.
Makkah Royal Clock Tower, Abraj Al Bait complex

577 metres (1,893ft) high
The clockface is to be 40 metres in diameter, five times larger than Big Ben in London.
Makkah Royal Clock Tower faciities will include 1,005 guest rooms, a lunar observation centre and Islamic museum.
The Abraj Al Bait complex is part of the King Abdul Aziz endowment project aimed at upgrading the precincts of Mecca and Medina.
