London-based Twelve Architects has secured Novy Urengoy Airport in Russia following the announcement that Airports of the Regions, part of the Renova Group one of Russia’s leading private business conglomerates, has agreed with Yamelo Nenets Regional Government a concession to redevelop and operate the Airport.
The new Novy Urengoy Airport is an integral part of the ongoing regeneration of Russia’s airport infrastructure. Novy Urengoy is situated next to one of the world’s largest gas fields and the airport will serve the city and the regional oil and gas industry.
The external form and interiors take inspiration from a ‘chum’, a temporary tent structure used by the Uralic reindeer herders of north-western Siberia where the airport is situated.
The baggage handling facility occupies a building separate from the main terminal but linked by a conveyor system. This enhances future flexibility and allows views from the arrivals area and check in through to the departures.
Matt Cartwright, CoFounder at Twelve Architects said: “We are delighted that the investment agreement has been signed and we can move forward into delivering this project. Like our other airport projects in Russia, the design of the building is heavily influenced by local conditions and culture, drawing inspiration from the huge variety found within the country.”
Twelve Architects recently completed Platov Airport in Rostov on Don, one of the host cities for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Platov Airport. The practice is currently working on two further airport projects, details of which it hopes to release soon.
The project is due to be completed in 2021.

St Petersburg Airport Building
Pulkovo Airport should act as a gateway to both St Petersburg and Russia, while reflecting the city it serves. The internal layout of the new terminal consists of well-defined and separate zones connected by individual walkways to echo the external layout of islands and bridges which make up the city.
