Galiasgar Kamal Tatarian State Academy Theater Competition Winners
We are glad to announce that Kengo Kuma & Associates (Japan), Werner Sobek AG (Germany), Wowhaus bureau (Russia) and Personal creative workshop of architect Bakulin German Alekseevich (Russia) will create a new space of the Galiasgar Kamal Theatre.
To create a new space of the Galiasgar Kamal Theatre there has been announced the Open International Competition for the Development of an Architectural Concept. One of the competition’s key missions is enabling a gentle approach and using architectural language to express the part of the national culture that has been cherished and interpreted by the theatre company for decades.
Transformed into a new architectural dominant, the building will remain connected to its context: the unique ecosystem of the Kaban lake chain, the centre of vivid urban life. The theatre will become yet another attraction for Kazan city dwellers and guests. For example, the new building is to have three halls: Main, Universal and Eastern, as well as creative and educational laboratories, a public area and rehearsal and administrative spaces.

“There are excellent candidates participating. They are all teams consisting of specialists from all over the world. Our task at this stage is to explain what is specific to the Republic of Tatarstan. We should introduce them to the nuances of Tatar culture, and create a team that will help them understand what is specific to Kazan and special about Tatarstan. It will help a lot in the work on projects,” said Farrukh Derakhshani, international curator of the competition.

Galiasgar Kamal Theatre Architecture Competition News
The Kamal Theater, the oldest national theater of Russia, was established in 1906.
The current theater building on the shore of the Kaban lake has been in operation since 1985.
Geographically, Kamal Theater is situated in the center, between the historical Russian and Tatar parts of Kazan, and between the hilly city center and the lowland behind Kaban lake. The concept of “center” also applies to the theater in a symbolical way: it’s a place where Russian, Tatar and other folk cultures that coexist in the republic cross, mix and there is mutually beneficial exchange. Architecturally, the theater plays a central role as well. The building resembling a sailing ship on the lake’s shore is a key urban dominant element in the area of the Bolaq channel, Kaban lake and Tatarstan street.
Its uniqueness is provided by the eclecticism of its repertoire, use of miscellaneous theatrical languages and techniques, versatility and flexibility of the acting company of the theater team in general, and varied activity forms, from on-stage performances to education. The theater has always played a role of an educational center, without limiting itself to activities tied to theater and performances alone. The theater has been holding forums that unite people from Turkic-language theaters across the CIS for many years, and is actively collaborating with European theaters.
