2022 World Cup in Qatar can only be held in November and December

The 2022 World Cup in Qatar can only be held in November and December, says the head of Fifa’s taskforce looking into possible dates for the tournament, reports the BBC.

Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al-Khalifa has ruled out a May tournament – the European leagues’ preferred option.

Qatar’s bid proposed a summer tournament, but temperatures in the Gulf state are believed to pose a potential risk to players’ health.

A January/February tournament would clash with the 2022 Winter Olympics.

“All parties have to compromise, not just the Europeans,” Sheikh Salman said.

The proposal raises the prospect of a stand-off between the game’s governing bodies and European clubs over domestic schedules and player availability for the tournament.

The announcement that the FIFA World Cup 2022 will be in Qatar took place on 4 Dec 2010.

For the Qatar 2022 stadium concept three existing stadiums will be expanded and nine new stadiums will be built with capacities reaching from approximately 45,000 seats for the group matches to more than 85,000 seats for the finals. All stadiums will provide optimal conditions for players, match officials, spectators and media representatives as they are equipped with an ultramodern eco-friendly cooling technology providing excellent outdoor comfort.

In order to meet the post-tournament demand of Qatar Stars League most of the stadiums have a modular upper tier which could be demounted after the World Cup.

Qatar’s hosting concept is extremely compact as all stadiums are within one hour drive from FIFA World Cup 2022 headquarters allowing fans to attend more than one a game a day. A new efficient metro system with a total length of 320 km will be accomplished in 2021.

All stadiums are connected to Qatar’s highway system providing convenient access for spectators; some stadiums could be also reached by water taxis. But not only the fans will benefit from the compactness but also teams as they could stay at their team base camp for the entire competition.

The bidding contest began with the publication of the official tender document in January 2009 and the declaration of interest by the interested nations by 2nd February 2009. The final show down will be on December 2nd 2010, when FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter will announce at the FIFA headquarters in Zurich the host nations of the 2018 and 2022 as decided by the 24-man FIFA Executive Committee.
