Mid-Nite Building Redevelopment Ivry
Design: Studio Malka Architecture
Location: Ivry-sur-Seine, Val-de-Marne department, southeastern suburbs of Paris, France
The Mid-Nite Building Redevelopment is located on the south side of Paris in Ivry, it is a total refurbishment of a building with a new vertical extension on top.
A fusion of the traditional Parisian roofscapes
Paris offers a large panorama of roofs, made up almost all with zinc, as it is low cost and very fast to operate. Exceptional equipments were made of copper, just as Le Grand Palais or L’ Opera Garner’s very caracteristic oxidized green.
The alliance of zinc and copper is obviously the most used and iconic materials of Parisian roofscape heritage. The fusion of theses two materials create brass, which we use to constitute the project.
Mid-Nite is a direct reference to the midnight sun or polar day, during which the sun does not set, both in the North Pole (Boreal) and in the South Pole (Austral).
Indeed, Mid-Nite is an architectural entity in perpetual brilliance; During the day the gold block is radiant and radiant solar, while it perpetually illuminates the night of its presence in the light of Paris’s lamp posts.
This project is bicephal; minimal yet radical it consist of two blocks; a black basement and a golden crown.
Thus combined, these two brutally superimposed masses contrast and unite in their own immaterialities; the pure and deep black block sits on the ground, absorb and dissolves the light, while the golden and reflective rectangle levitate above.
