The scheme extends from Banbury Road to Woodstock Road in central Oxford. Situated opposite the proposed Mathematics Institute in the University’s Radcliffe Observatory Quarter, the proposal marks a new gateway into the city centre from the north. It will provide a mix of facilities that combines residential, communal, teaching and research facilities into a single complex including 240 study bedrooms, Fellow’s accommodation, café, library, teaching rooms and a research complex.
The strategy maximises the use of the entire site while enhancing the surrounding gardens and providing active frontages to both roads. By developing towards the perimeter of the site, it follows Keble’s original Butterfield approach, creating a large central open space – Keble’s ‘Sixth Quad’.
“We are delighted that this ambitious and inspiring scheme is getting the go-ahead. The development occupies a very important site in Oxford and Rick Mather’s imaginative design will make a huge contribution to the city as well as to the future of Keble College” said Averil Cameron, Warden of Keble College.

Revised proposals submitted
Rick Mather Architects are to redevelop the 1.7-acre Acland Hospital Site for Keble College extending from the Banbury to Woodstock Roads in central Oxford.
The brief calls for a challenging mix of facilities that combines residential, communal, teaching and research facilities into a single complex. It is virtually a small college with 240 rooms, café, library, teaching rooms and research facilities.
The practice’s original design was recently revised to incorporate part of the 1897 Grade II listed building by Thomas Jackson. The strategy developed by Rick Mather Architects maximises the use of the entire site. By developing around the perimeter of the site, it follows Keble’s original Butterfield approach, creating a large central open space – Keble’s ‘Sixth Quad’.
A 3-storey curved glass building containing the research facilities addresses Woodstock Road and the new University development at the Radcliffe Observatory Quarter opposite.
