Skøyen Station Oslo Railway Building Renewal News
Norway’s capital city boasts a newly renovated historic railway hub with a focus on aesthetics, functionality and comfort.
Oslo’s Skøyen station is a major railway hub in Norway’s transportation system. The second busiest station in the country, it has been in operation since 1872. This busy railway hub had sustained significant damage over the years due to the high volume of passengers passing through every day.
As a result, some areas exhibited visible signs of wear and tear, the building’s internal climate was suboptimal, and the spaces felt cramped. These factors combined to create an unwelcoming atmosphere that often made people feel unsafe at night.
The architecture firm Plus Arkitektur oversaw the redevelopment of the site, which took place between 2023 and 2024 on behalf of Bane Nor Property. The main goal was to enhance the travel experience for all users, making the station a more welcoming and reassuring place.
Significant upgrades were made to the lighting and ventilation systems, and the signage and information displays were modernized. A key part of the project was redesigning the staircase leading to platforms 3 and 4, with the aim of creating a wider, more accessible area that met modern design standards.
The flooring coverings and staircase cladding have been designed to combine aesthetics, durability and functionality: Venice Villa: Full Body 3 porcelain stoneware by FMG Fabbrica Marmi e Graniti. The graphic texture of Venice Villa evokes the natural look of stone, creating a visual link between the various construction elements. Its Beige color complements the warm tones of the wood perfectly, balancing the cooler tones of the surrounding concrete.
This redevelopment project has completely transformed the building’s original appearance, which gave the impression that it was located deep underground. Venice Villa by FMG has played a key role in creating a brighter and more spacious environment that is now more pleasant and visually appealing.
