The Bougheries Structure
People are our greatest UNTAPPED CAPITAL – their grace and beauty too often left unremarked, uncaptured, and untraced.
The Bougheries project seeks to harness and reveal the extraordinary elegance and energy of humanity with a series of structures that map and mirror the ergonomics of everyday movements and gestures – from sitting to standing, lounging to laughing.
The Bougheries are – like the trees that inspired them – multifunctional: structural, sheltering, entrancing and accommodating, their limbs inviting play and use, their sheathing delicately rippling in the breeze. They offer an endless real-time archive, constantly recording and celebrating the traces left by people, their limbs reconfigurable to form any range of shapes, ensuring only that their feet touch to self-brace.
The 10 structures are all utterly unique, fusing structural analysis with ergonomic opportunism. Each is made from 4 bespoke CNCcarved laminated-plywood limbs that stack together and hinge open at their apex to form a self-bracing cross in plan.
The lower limbs further bifurcate to offer further stability and invite use. Each legs acts as a supple truss, perforated with optimised voids that are packed like a Swiss-Army Knife, laced with inlaid wiring and lighting and pockets for ballast, and embedded with useful tools and surfaces that unfold to form braces, chairs, tables, and shelves.
The truss chords elongate to form hooks and fronds and structural cantilevers for counters and storage. A parametric Grasshopper script allows variation at will, generating cornucopic designs that range from bald to hairy, a few solitary protrusions, to thick wavy fronds. Further software optimises the nesting of components on the plywood sheets to create a no-waste eco-friendly solution.
Each unit is sheathed in an adjustable ultra-lightweight rip-stop nylon fabric that shelters its occupants with a canopy of virtual leaves, slits and cords allowing interconnection between units, or its evanescence.
