Schützenstraße Development Munich News
David Chipperfield Architects Berlin has won the competition for the development of a mixed-use complex in the heart of Munich. The jury chaired by Professor Ludwig Wappner, selected the office’s design, developed in collaboration with the landscape architects Atelier Loidl Landschaftsarchitekten, as the winner from a total of eleven entries from international architectural practices.
Signa Real Estate Germany will develop the building complex on Schützenstrasse between Munich’s main railway station and the central square Karlsplatz, which will create a lively, urban atmosphere through its functional diversity and generous public green spaces. The design reflects the mediaeval small-scale urban structure of the surrounding area as well as the rational, representative scale of the former imperial capital, combining both principles in a new, metropolitan structure.
The permeable ground floor, a pillared hall with a visible structure made of recycled concrete, connects the streets Prielmayerstraße and Schützenstraße via two passages. On both streets, arcades invite passers-by to visit the building with its diverse public programme at ground floor level, including cultural facilities, shops, cafés and restaurants.
Green spaces with seating areas open up to the street space, giving structure and scale to the building complex. Building volumes of varying scales, which become increasingly smaller towards the top, are situated above the ground floor. In between these volumes, leafy terraces and an intensively planted, publicly accessible roofscape provide inviting external spaces on several levels. The office areas on the upper floors are planned as a timber hybrid construction, wrapped in a façade of green anodised aluminium profiles.
David Chipperfield says: “We are very pleased to have been selected through competition for the development on Schützenstraße in Munich together with Atelier Loidl and to have the opportunity to work in Munich again, especially on such an important site. As architects, we are aware that the city depends on the quality of private building projects that give something back to the city. Never has this been more important. My partners and our team are excited to work on this project that has the potential to create a strong public-social dimension that reinforces the quality, richness and complexity of the city.”
