Sunny House, Australia
Sunny House is named for its character as well as its location. This house for a family of four was designed for entertaining and providing spaces for the kids and their friends to hang out, with the living areas oriented to capture the changing light of the day as the sun moves over the house from early morning to late afternoon. It’s officially the go-to house, which is exactly what the parents intended.
The large corner window is the focal point of the living area, providing a view of the pool that surrounds the feature window. With a spacious alfresco, integrated BBQ area, and pool facilities that connect the living and kitchen areas, this is the place to be for both kids and parents that hosts both family gatherings and great teenage kids parties.
Custom made joinery and furniture fill the house. The fireplace is a focal point in the living area, using Superwhite Dolomite stone for the hearth and a matching custom made coffee table. A bespoke dinging table (by Wyk Architecture) was designed to seat 12 people using a Dekton solid surface top in a Kelya Natural finish with solid timber stained legs.
Materials were selected both for their aesthetic contribution to the design as well as their functionality and longevity. Bluestone floor tiles in a 800 x 1200 format line the floors of the living and kitchen areas and are extended to the floor finishes of the external alfresco areas for a continuous, seamless floor finish from inside to out.
The powder room was designed to be inviting and moody with carefully placed lighting over a blade vanity basin that sits up against “The Raven” terrazzo tiles from Fibonacci to the floors and walls.
Carefully concealed service areas like the butler’s pantry and laundry areas are accessed via a concealed timber pivot door that’s hidden as part of the stair joinery. The stair is also a carefully constructed item using the “Mink Grey” timber flooring from Royal Oak Floors and a custom made zig-zag steel stringer giving it the allusion that it’s floating.
With the entertainment areas taken care of, the next point of focus was to design the private spaces. A media room, study, gym area and 3 bedrooms are located in the private zones of the home. The master bedroom takes advantage of city views and provides a walk-through-robe to the spacious ensuite. Using the Volcano range from Academy Tiles the floor to wall tiles line the ensuite with a walk-in shower (with shower seat) and floating vanity benchtop make the ensuite a refuge for the parents.
Externally the materials were also selected for their longevity and low maintenance. Austral Masonry GB Smooth Charcoal blocks are used for the lower level structure. The first floor level is clad with CSR Cemintel Barestone “External Original”. A concealed timber lined garage door and front façade created openings for the front door and the garage entry.
What was the brief?
To create a family home that has a focus on entertaining and living areas around the pool and alfresco.
What were the key challenges?
The challenges of this site was the substantial fall across the site and providing a seamless transition from the front to the rear of the house.
What were the solutions?
The solutions were to carefully consider the existing site levels and use them to the buildings advantage.
Key products used:
GB Smooth Pewter blockwork, Biowood external wall panelling, Superwhite Dolomite stone to fireplace
