BDP appointed by Network Rail to oversee redevelopment of the historic Victoria Station building.
Lee Wasnidge, area director, Northern Rail said: “The appointment of this contract is an important step towards the transformation of Manchester Victoria into a modern gateway to this vibrant city.”
The contract will define the output and scope of the project, and its ultimate aims. It will look at constraints and boundaries that may limit options, will work up all the options available and assess the most suitable to be developed and taken forward.
- A glazed screen between platforms and concourse to improve the concourse environment and provide protection from the weather (similar to Piccadilly station) and glazed station entrance doors;
- Possible relocation of the ticket office and provision of a centrally located travel centre;
- Work to protect the heritage features of the station such as the external façade and canopy, the war memorials, the dome roof in the café, and the station mosaics;
- Potential for improved and additional retail facilities; and
- Provision for step-free access to the arena, and additional Metrolink platforms, if required in the future
Victoria Station Redevelopment – Further Information
Timescales:-
– Outline design of preferred option, discussions over heritage issues and listed building consent approvals to be undertaken between May and December 2011
– Detailed design and actual work to be carried out between Feb 2012 and Dec 2014
– Project completed Dec 2014
In a separate scheme valued at £1.7m (including a £40,000 contribution from GMITA) funded as part of the DfT’s National Stations Improvement Programme:-
– the lighting on platforms three to six will be upgraded
– the current ladies toilet will be completely renovated to provide ladies, gents, baby changing and fully accessible facilities (at which time the existing gents toilet will close)
– there will be additional CCTV and help points on the station
– there will be additional cycle hoops
Platforms one and two have recently been completely rebuilt by Network Rail and the tracks re-laid at a cost of £3.6m
The work at Manchester Victoria supports Network Rail’s plans for the Northern Hub which provides the opportunity for 700 more trains per day and 3.5 million more passengers each year through enhancements to the rail network, which includes a significantly greater role for Manchester Victoria and a new connection between Manchester Victoria and Manchester Piccadilly and Manchester Airport.
