The Gate Aparthotel
A new Aparthotel in Aldgate creates a landmark scheme for Reef Group on the city fringe, providing a new accommodation offer for the area.
This new project by Stockwool has redeveloped the former run down commercial units to provide a 189-bed, 21-storey Aparthotel. Despite the relatively modest footprint of the site, space is maximised to accommodate 8,707m2 GIA.
Located close to Aldgate East station and Brick Lane, the aparthotel features a reception at ground floor and a business lounge on the fifth floor with a residents roof terrace. The upper floors of the scheme offer panoramic views over London.
Guided by the existing building’s triangular footprint the design draws on New York’s Flat Iron building for inspiration resulting in a landmark building which successfully responds to its varied context and the challenging site constraints. It includes a brickwork base, in keeping with the surroundings, and a bronze-framed façade on the upper floors.
Prefabricated elements were used to save construction time and improve quality. Precast brickwork was assembled by specialists off site and integrated with the traditional brickwork seamlessly. Thousands of special shaped bricks were procured. Complex geometries and textures were created to create a subtle layering in the facade, to emphasise openings and introduce shadows and patterns of projections and recesses. The contractor also utilised state-of-the-art ‘Ishbeck Titan’ shroud safety screens that were jacked up the building to avoid the drawbacks of traditional scaffolding and which suited the extruded form of the design perfectly. The detail and contrast in the bold brick pattern crisply contrast with the large bronze framed openings and sweeping curves of the layered form.
The team dedicated itself to detailing the rooms and layouts, optimising each room to make them a multipurpose home away from home. Fully tiled wet rooms with shower screens and luxury fittings, upholstered headboards and specially designed armchairs allow the user to enjoy an enhanced experience, whilst providing the durability and multi functionality a small space demands.
John Woolstencroft, Partner at Stockwool said: “We worked closely with Reef Group to develop a striking design that respects the area but also made the most of the challenging site shape and I believe the team excelled at achieving just that.”
