St Thomas’ Hospital East Wing renewed

A renewed East Wing building at St Thomas’ Hospital in central London has been unveiled following refurbishment of its exterior and the creation of new areas.

Redevelopment of the 13-storey building, which includes intensive care and cardiac care facilities, has allowed St Thomas’ Hospital to improve both patient care and the working environment for staff in one of the UK’s largest hospitals.

“East Wing is home to some of the most important clinical services at St Thomas’, caring for some of our sickest patients. The rationale for the East Wing project was simple – the building was leaking, it wasn’t energy efficient, and the lifts to take patients from A&E to intensive care and wards were not fit for purpose, and so a complete overhaul was needed. Improving our infrastructure without disrupting patient care is a key priority and we are very proud that the East Wing project was completed without cancelling any appointments or treatment.”

An innovative design solution, developed jointly by Arup, Hopkins Architects and ISG, allowed the hospital to refurbish rather than empty, demolish and rebuild. Crucially, our solution allowed the building to remain operational throughout construction. Two bright and airy atria have been created to weatherproof the building. These have also provided the space needed for new patient transfer lifts.

Arup’s team worked to develop a ‘double skin’ high-performance façade, to re-route essential services through the congested site, and to design robust connections between new-build elements and the existing structure. The result is an attractive and energy-efficient environment that positively impacts upon patient wellbeing.

The East Wing project was managed by Essentia – Guy’s and St Thomas’ in-house infrastructure provider – and delivered by a team led by ISG with Hopkins Architects, Arup and project managers Mace.

Arup’s other projects for Guy’s and St Thomas’ include playing a central role in the award-winning refurbishment of Guy’s Hospital Tower and the provision of multi-disciplinary engineering services for Guy’s new Cancer Centre, which is currently under construction.
