Guy’s & St Thomas’ Re-cladding Competition

Winner announced for Guy’s and St Thomas’ East Wing Re-Cladding Competition

Hopkins Architects and ISG are the winning team in the competition for the re-cladding of a 13-storey tower building on the St Thomas’ Hospital site in central London, it is announced today.

Launched in March this year by RIBA Competitions on behalf of Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, the competition sought teams with the capacity and imagination to design and deliver a scheme that would enhance the Trust’s reputation for healthcare provision and its landmark status in London. At the same time, the design needed to address existing structural issues. The East Wing building has a significant presence on the London skyline and the competition sought to achieve a re-cladding design of exemplary quality befitting its prominent location within the city.

Architects and contractors were required to collaborate from day one, and the competition followed a multi-stage process. At the final stage teams were invited to come up with design concepts that would provide a re-cladding solution for the building that would also enhance the internal environment by addressing water ingress, improve insulation and increase energy efficiency.

The Hopkins/ISG winning design is a single skin of glass, with a timber mullion and stainless steel external pressure cap, which creates a thermal buffer zone and two new triangular atria. The judges thought this to be a thorough and well thought through proposal with the potential to achieve a significant transformation in the image of the hospital, both externally and internally with generous atria spaces which would enhance the experience for patients and staff.

Speaking of the winning design, RIBA Adviser and Jury Panel member David Henderson, Co-director of Bennetts Associates said “The winning team has developed a proposal which is intelligent, stylish, appropriate and convincing at all levels from its construction strategy to its approach to sustainability. It will transform, not just the East Wing but the whole surrounding environment.”

The competition allowed teams to engage with the client team with one-to-one briefing sessions held mid-way through the design phase. An extensive consultation exercise was held before the final judging session.

Alastair Gourlay, Programme Director for Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, said “We recognised that re-cladding a building that will be fully occupied in the centre of one of London’s largest teaching hospital close to the Houses of Parliament and Lambeth Palace was going to be difficult. The quality of the design submissions was beyond our expectations and our team really enjoyed the time we had with each of the competitors. The winning design is a stunning response to the brief and was the most popular in the public consultation. It will be a great asset for St Thomas’ Hospital that will significantly enhance the building for staff and patients alike.”

Mike Taylor of Hopkins Architects, said “We are delighted to have the opportunity this appointment offers to work on the site immediately adjacent to our previous project, the Evelina Children’s Hospital. Our aim is to transform the current East Wing into a building worthy of Guy’s and St Thomas’ reputation as a world class hospital by redefining the envelope around the existing structure and thereby improving the environmental conditions internally. When complete the remodelled East Wing will hopefully feel like a brand new, high performance building which should serve as a timely demonstration of value and sustainability on a limited budget.”

The shortlisted teams for the next stage in the competition for the re-cladding of a 13-storey tower building on the St Thomas’ Hospital site in central London, is announced today. The shortlisted architect/contractor teams are:

The East Wing building has a significant presence on the London skyline and the competition seeks a re-cladding design of exemplary quality befitting its prominent location within the city. The judging panel chose architect/contractor teams who had demonstrated the capacity and imagination to design and deliver a scheme that would symbolically enhance Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust’s reputation for healthcare provision and its landmark status in London.

The teams have until the beginning of August to come up with their design concepts, and a winner is expected to be announced later in the year.

RIBA Competition : Re-Cladding Scheme for Guy’s & St Thomas’ Hospital

Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust is seeking expressions of interest for the re-cladding of a 13-storey tower building on the St Thomas’ Hospital site in central London. The East Wing building has a significant urban presence on the London skyline, being situated on the south side of the River Thames opposite the Houses of Parliament.

The competition seeks a re-cladding design of exemplary quality befitting its location, that will at the same time provide a long-term solution to improved weatherproofing and energy efficiency. The Trust has aspirations that the re-cladding scheme should be of the highest architectural quality hence the decision to proceed down the RIBA competition route. A challenge to design teams will be to achieve a solution that can be delivered with the minimum of disruption and interference to the existing building, without the need for decanting. The internal refurbishment of the building will be carried out separately, at a later date.

The Trust wishes to ensure that the full design team is committed to both the design and delivery of the re-cladding scheme and the competition therefore seeks expressions of interest from contractor/architect teams with the capacity and imagination to deliver the project. The successful consortia will need to strike a balance that considers cost, long-term value and architecture, to generate an outstanding vision that will symbolically enhance the Trust’s reputation for healthcare provision and its landmark status in London.

The £21m (approx) project will be the second competition organised this year for the Trust and it follows the announcement last month of a competition for a new £90m Cancer Treatment Centre.

The competition jury panel will include architects David Henderson, co-director of Bennetts Associates, and Jim Eyre OBE of Wilkinson Eyre Architects.

A shortlist of up to six design teams will be invited to produce design proposals and each paid an equal honorarium of £15,000 (plus VAT). In the first instance the competition seeks expressions of interest from consortia which must as a minimum include a contractor, architect, engineers, and a cladding specialist.

The deadline for application is 13th April 2010 and a preliminary briefing paper is available to download from the competition organisers, RIBA Competitions (www.architecture.com/competitions).
