ROYAL ACADEMY OF ARTS LAUNCHES NEW ERA FOR ARCHITECTURE WITH ANNOUNCEMENT OF INAUGURAL ARCHITECTURE AWARDS WEEK EVENTS
The Royal Academy of Arts will hold a week of events from 3 – 6 July 2018 to celebrate its increased commitment to architecure, made possible by a generous donation from the Dorfman Foundation.

The week will include the announcement of the winner of the inaugural Royal Academy Dorfman Award, the Royal Academy Architecture Prize Lecture by Japanese architect Itsuko Hasegawa and discussion panels and presentations by students and educators.
Launched in 2017, the Royal Academy’s two new annual awards encompass the Royal Academy Architecture Prize, honouring an individual or collective for their contribution to the culture of architecture, and the Royal Academy Dorfman Award, recognising an international talent that represents the future of architecture. The awards celebrate the relationship between art and architecture and demonstrate the RA’s role as a global advocate for architecture.

The shortlist of five architects for the Royal Academy Dorfman Award include Anne Holtrop, Founder, Studio Holtrop (The Netherlands and Bahrain), Rahel Shawl, Founder, RAAS Architects (Ethiopia), Architectura Expandida (Colombia), Alireza Taghaboni, Founder, Next Office (Iran) and Go Hasegawa, Founder, Go Hasegawa and Associates (Japan).

The awards are being judged by a distinguished international jury, chaired by the architect and Royal Academician Louisa Hutton. Jury members also include architect Richard Rogers RA, Dean of Harvard Graduate School of Design Mohsen Mostafavi, BBC broadcaster Razia Iqbal, artist Conrad Shawcross RA and critic and curator Joseph Grima.

The Benjamin West Lecture Theatre
Wednesday 4 July 2018, 2.30 – 6.00pm
The five finalists for the Royal Academy Dorfman Award will present in front of a renowned international jury. This will be followed by a lively discussion between cultural commentators examining architecture in a global context.
The afternoon will conclude with the announcement of the winner of the inaugural Royal Academy Dorfman Award and the presentation of the £10,000 prize. The ceremony includes brief remarks by Kate Goodwin, Head of Architecture and Drue Heinz Curator, Royal Academy of Arts, the philanthropist Lloyd Dorfman and the architect Alan Stanton RA. The event will be followed by a drinks reception in the Collections Gallery

Following the celebration of the Royal Academy Dorfman Award, Japanese architect Itsuko Hasegawa will receive the inaugural Royal Academy Architecture Prize, honouring her inspiring and enduring contribution to the culture of architecture. She will give a lecture about her work and influences.

The Influence of Japanese Architecture

Friday 6 July 2018 6.30 – 8pm
This panel discussion, which draws to a close the RA’s Architecture Awards week, will look at how the architecture of Japan, from its innovative housing designs to its traditional building methods has inspired generations of architects. Speakers include Itsuko Hasegawa (translated by Sakiko Kohashi), artist Rebecca Salter RA, Takeshi Hayatsu, founder of Hayatsu Architects and Peter Salter, Professor of Architectural Design at the Welsh School of Architecture, Cardiff University. This event is supported by the Japan Foundation.
