The Most Innovative award went to the Pop-Up Ute project in Camden by Friend and Company Architects.
This is an up-cycled addition to a brownfield industrial heritage site decorated with a vibrant and retro interior.
Made from a kit of lightweight parts, the design balances the overall weight of the host building, requiring a concept of subtracting the heavier historic construction elements to free up and extend with ultra-lightweight additions.
According to the architects, Friend and Company Architects “aims to create beautiful, simple buildings through a dialogue with clients, end-users and collaborators…Founding Director, Adrian Friend, is an RIBA Educator and has taught and lectured throughout the UK. Credited with establishing a projects office for University of Nottingham and leading the inaugural Jouberton Nursery ‘live-project’, designed and built by students in South Africa, Adrian has also helped implement a new architecture undergraduate programme for Norwich University of the Arts, returning the study of architecture to the city after a 50 year absence.”
The winning projects will now be featured in a dedicated magazine and a three-month exhibition of London’s 120 best home extension projects.
The free exhibition will be shown at NLA’s Galleries at The Building Centre, from 26 January to 20 April 2018.
