A new home for entertaining and relaxing, the project re-establishes a single house from a building divided into flats, creatively re-imagining how it is lived in and enjoyed.
Elmwood Road is a fascinating project with many untypical aspects. The owners had lived in the upper floor flat of the converted mid terrace house for some years and purchased the ground floor flat in order to recreate the single dwelling. Their brief to Conibere Phillips Architects was to design a home in which they could entertain friends and family, and also a place to relax and re-energise. Pragmatism was a priority, combined with exacting quality and a richness of materials and finish.
Although much of the design focus was on how the house was to be lived in, this also led to major alterations to the building façade to admit daylight and increase connection to the re-landscaped garden. New large openings create light filled spaces that are visually more connected to one another, as well as outside.
At roof level the bold decision was made to agree a common appearance for the proposed roof extension and the neighbour’s existing extension. The result is a new coherency to the pair of houses that had previously been lost.
Bespoke joinery was designed throughout the house, with the concept design by Conibere Phillips detailed and built by joinery specialist Create Bespoke. A library wall to the dining area extends through to the kitchen and includes a giant concealed door. The kitchen itself has single large island unit centred on the window bay where a seating area enjoys views of the garden.
Perhaps the most significant joinery piece is the shaped plywood roof structure to the roof extension study. This finely detailed and crafted structure folds upwards to create additional volume and is a bold, dynamic addition to the Edwardian home.

A South London-based design and build company has been announced as the winner of Best Bespoke Luxury Design/Build Company at this year’s BUILD Architecture Awards.
This is the second year in a row that boutique firm, Create Bespoke, has scooped the prestigious award and comes following a custom refurbishment in Herne Hill, London, which involved converting two flats into a stunning four-storey home.
Andy Young, Founder at Create Bespoke, commented on the win: “We are delighted to have been awarded this award for the second year running. We believe that our solid reputation for quality, care and consideration in everything we do, combined with impeccable customer service and an exceptional standard of finish are the main keys to our success and are helping to establish Create Bespoke as one of London’s leading design and build specialists.
“There were many exciting challenges involved in this project, the main one being an architecturally designed complex geometric roof structure which enables maximum internal head height in the loft conversion. This had to be specially designed, programmed for CNC cutting and installed by our expert joinery team. Despite the intricacies and challenges involved the results are truly spectacular.”
The BUILD awards launched in 2015 to acknowledge the outstanding works conducted by imaginative designers, engineers and visionaries.
Create Bespoke is currently working on multiple high-profile projects underway in Notting Hill, Belsize Park, East Dulwich and West Norwood as well as forming new partnerships and expanding the team as demand for bespoke design and build has increased.
Create bespoke specialises in custom design and build projects, high-end construction and refurbishment, custom joinery and quality finishes.
