UNIVERSITY OF GREENWICH APPOINTS
HENEGHAN PENG ARCHITECTS FOR CAMPUS DEVELOPMENT

The University of Greenwich has announced its intention to appoint award-winning Heneghan Peng Architects to design a new campus library and a home for its School of Architecture & Construction. The development will be based in Greenwich town centre, within a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A selection panel chaired by the distinguished architect Lord Rogers chose the practice from a shortlist of seven; over 70 expressions of interest were submitted.

Heneghan Peng Architects has a track record of working in important and sensitive architectural settings and this is its fourth commission in a World Heritage Site. It has designed the visitors’ centre for the Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland, the Grand Museum of Egypt at the Pyramids and a bridge across the Rhine Valley in Germany.

Other current projects include a river bridge for the London 2012 Games, linking the Olympic Stadium to the Aquatic Centre and Basketball Arena, and the extension and refurbishment of the National Gallery in Ireland.

The university’s plans for the development of the site are at an early stage. As part of the development process, the university will consult local residents, businesses and other neighbouring organisations.

The first students and staff are scheduled to move onto the site by the start of the academic year 2013/14. In the meantime, the university has been busy clearing the site, surveying buildings and rationalising services such as water and gas. A programme of enabling works, including the removal of the existing, dilapidated, buildings on the site, is planned. This will be followed by essential investigations such as archaeological digs, geological surveys and a study of land contamination.
The initiative will provide an important boost to the local economy, increasing staff and student numbers in the town and bringing additional income to local businesses.

Heneghan Peng Architects
Shih-Fu Peng and Roisin Heneghan met in Graduate School at Harvard from where they graduated in 1992. Heneghan Peng Architects was founded in 1999 in New York and relocated to Dublin in 2001 after winning the international competition for the Kildare County Council Civic Offices. The completed project subsequently won an RIBA European Award and Sustainability Energy Ireland’s Building of the Year.

In 2003, the practice won the competition for the Grand Museum of Egypt beside the Pyramids in Giza. Since then Heneghan Peng Architects has won a number of international competitions and commissions including the Giant’s Causeway Visitors’ Centre in Northern Ireland, the extension of the National Gallery of Ireland, the Central Bridges, a central focus at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Headquarters for Arabsat in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and the Mittelrheinbrücke, the bridge which will cross the Rhine near Koblenz, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The site
The new development is planned for a 0.64 hectare site in Greenwich, South London. It fronts onto Stockwell Street and backs onto properties in Nevada Street and King William Walk.

The Greenwich Campus
This is the largest of the university’s three campuses; the others are based at Avery Hill, also in the London Borough of Greenwich, and at Medway in Kent.
The Greenwich Campus is centred on Sir Christopher Wren’s Old Royal Naval College at the heart of the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site. It also includes the neighbouring Dreadnought Library and Stephen Lawrence Building and two halls of residence in Devonport House and over the Cutty Sark DLR development.

The Greenwich campus celebrates its tenth anniversary this year. The university has more than a century of service in the borough, tracing its roots back to 1892.
Academic departments based on the Greenwich campus include the Business School, the School of Computing & Mathematical Sciences, the School of Humanities & Social Sciences and the Greenwich Maritime Institute. The campus is home to a number of research groups.

The School of Architecture & Construction
Currently based at the Avery Hill Campus, the School of Architecture & Construction carries out teaching, research and consultancy in architecture, landscape architecture, buildings and facilities management, 3D design, surveying, construction management and estate management. http://www.gre.ac.uk/schools

The selection process
The selection of an architect has been managed under the OJEU process. The university has taken a decision to appoint Heneghan Peng; under the terms of the process, the formal award of a contract has not yet been made.
