designjunction (21 – 24 September) returns to the spectacular King’s Cross site for the annual London Design Festival (LDF) offering a diverse selection of things to see and do during its four-day residence. As the show continues to be a leading destination for design, arts and culture, visitors can experience a plethora of immersive experiences, participate in creative workshops, indulge in a spot of retail therapy, engage in lively talks and debates and much more.

With an abundance of design experiences to choose from, the top activities not to be missed at designjunction this September include:

Take a walk through Granary Square
Visitors to Granary Square will be spoilt for choice at this year’s show. The various stand-out projects, immersive installations and exciting food and drink options, will offer those who are curious about design the opportunity to experience different forms of design in a unique and creative way.

Positioned in the middle of the fountain space is the immersive Turkishceramics ‘Gateways’ installation designed by Adam Nathaniel Furman in celebration of the rich history of ceramics from Turkey. Renault UK presents its award-winning-concept car TreZor, never before seen in the UK, housed inside a bespoke interactive two-storey structure. Visitors will also get the chance to view designs from Renault’s collaboration with Central Saint Martins’ industrial design students who have designed a car for the future in a unique contest.

A refreshing addition to designjunction, Campari®, Italy’s iconic red bittersweet apéritif, will host a 10-day residency in King’s Cross with the ‘Campari Creates’ customised narrowboat in the Granary Square waterway. The centrepiece of the residency will be an installation by Eley Kishimoto commissioned by Campari to adorn the banks of the canal with a bespoke art installation featuring the iconic Campari logo. Additionally, visitors will be served a selection of Campari cocktails and Italian street food bringing the spirit of Milan’s stylish Navigli district to central London.

Visitors can also enjoy a serving of white ports and tonics at the pop-up Tala mini bar, set within a refurbished vintage car on the square. Tala will also showcase an installation of its Voronoi bulbs that will form a forest-like canopy above the car.

Dubai Design District (d3):

Dubai Design District (d3) will showcase its ‘Middle East: Design Now!’ exhibition at designjunction for the first time, bringing together works from a collective of emerging designers and artists. For those interested in creating unique ways of adding space, Remote Possibilities, a new initiative launching at designjunction this year, will house the show’s Box Office, showcasing the versatility of these pods that are suitable not only for public spaces, but also for personal use within the home.

Engage in lively talks and debates at designjunction 2017 in Kings Cross

designjunction presents a two-day programme of lively talks and debates at The Office Group (TOG). Anchored around the show’s theme ‘where design meets’, designjunction’s 2017 Talks Programme is designed to inspire, engage and provoke. Over the two days, fourteen sessions will delve into a variety of engaging topics that affect and inform the design industry. From digital and workspace, to materials and home, the programme includes sessions with a stellar line-up of leading designers and creative brands (21-22 September).

Be captivated by talks from Sir Kenneth Grange and Rodney Kinsman RDI (OMK 1965) both of whom will be in conversation with Design Museum Director Deyan Sudjic to discuss their design works, their successes and their approach to design over the years.

Join in one of the designjunction 2017 in Kings Cross creative workshops

designjunction offers visitors the chance to get creative with a number of innovative workshops to choose from.

Highlights of Central Saint Martins’ (CSM) short courses include a ‘Drawing For Design’ workshop by Ilga Leimanis and a ‘Frankensteining’ workshop by Rod Judkins where attendees will explore ways of creating something new from pre-existing materials.

Throughout Campari’s ten-day residency in King’s Cross, the Italian aperitif brand will host a series of ‘Campari Creates’ Masterclasses offering attendees the chance to get creative whilst enjoying one of Campari’s signature serves.

The ‘Perfect Cocktails’ class (£15) will teach participants how to create Campari’s most famous cocktails, whilst the ‘Design Your Own Campari Bottle’ class (£20) will see the London Craft Club impart its creative knowledge of how to design a bespoke, personalised Campari bottle.

Additionally, a talk by Eley Kishimoto on the creation of their public installation will highlight the inspiration behind the design and its development (£FOC).

Those interested to learn the art of creating beautiful bouquets can do so with the help of bloomon. Inside a discreet floral room found at the end of the flower tunnel that promises to be one of Granary Square’s main attractions, the flower delivery service will host a series of intimate flower arranging workshops (£27). Ticket holders will also be treated to a bespoke floral cocktail in this one-hour class.

Indulge in some retail therapy at The Canopy

A temporary pop-up retail venue featuring over 70 retail brands and emerging designers, The Canopy gives visitors the opportunity to browse and buy design-led home and fashion accessories, jewellery, technology, ceramics, stationery and textiles under one roof. Choose from Another Studio’s selection of homewares including its Timber Tailor wooden light pendants, Such & Such’s curated offering of concrete pedants, linen and ceramic tableware and more, the latest range of unisex sunglasses by Monc London, the new Milan stationery collection from Papersmiths, or Dashel’s selection of urban helmets to name a few.

Pit-stop at designjunction’s creative cafés and pop-up food stalls

For those looking to refuel with a snack and a drink whilst taking in all the design inspiration, designjunction presents two creative cafés and a host of pop-up vendors.

Celebrating the launch of 2LG and Custhom’s new collection of luxury wallpapers, linens and velvets, the London based design studios will bring an interactive café to Cubitt Park. Visitors can participate in live screen printing, adding colour and pattern to the space and walls of the café.

As part of an exciting collaboration, Kickstarter and the Turner Prize-winning collective Assemble will stage an immersive café, in The Canopy, to showcase SPLATWARE, a new line of limited edition experimental tableware products made by Granby Workshop.

London-based Hourglass will be operating designjunction’s purpose-built cafes across the show areas. Re-charge and relax with locally-sourced artisan coffees, teas and specialty hot drinks alongside a short vegetarian menu, freshly baked cakes and pastries.

Returning to the buzzing Granary Square, Real Food Festival will bring a selection of the most delicious street food vans in London. Choose from the carefully selected, top-quality artisan food options on offer.

Also making a return to the show, Paleta Girls will bring visitors its delicious and refreshing superfruit ice lollies that are packed with 100% natural ingredients. All paletas are handmade and free from refined sugar, relying on the natural sweetness of the fruits and just a touch of honey or dates.

What better beer brand could do a pop-up in The Canopy section than Canopy Beer Co? The aptly named brand is a brewery and tap room based a stone’s throw from Brockwell Park, South London. Their emphasis is on drinkable, vibrant beers made with minimal intervention – no filtration, no finings and no pasteurisation. Canopy Beer Co will be serving their small batch beers in The Canopy across show open dates.

Be productive, creative and stay connected at the pop-up workspace
Creating a pop-up workspace at designjunction’s Cubitt House, on-demand meeting space provider Breather collaborates with furniture manufacture Modus. The Breather x Modus workspace will be the perfect place for trade and press visitors to work, meet, focus and get online. The space will feature Modus’s expanded ‘Edge’ collection by design consultancy PearsonLloyd.

Support young and emerging designers at designjunction 2017 in Kings Cross

designjunction also sets the bar for new and emerging design, with displays of the UK’s inaugural Rado Star Prize competition, where a shortlist of ten finalists’ projects will be displayed in The Crossing. Exploring the theme ‘Design Meets Time’, the winning design will be announced at the show with the winner receiving a £5,000 cash prize and a Rado Ceramica watch. Additionally, the public can select their favourite project among the finalists by voting at the show, with the winner of the public vote receiving a Rado Ceramica watch.

Additionally, ARTS THREAD, the online educational tool designed to connect industry students, universities and schools will showcase a curated selection of new designers. TroupingColour, a project developed to create opportunities for young designers who join forces to exhibit their works will also be on show.

View illuminating lighting brands and impressive light installations

The show welcomes back lightjunction, an area on the ground floor of Cubitt House dedicated to decorative lighting brands from across the globe. Rich Brilliant Willing launches the sculptural Palindrome Chandelier, whilst Martinelli Luce showcases its Cyborg and Plisse lamps for the first time in the UK. In addition, Resident will create an installation suspended over the staircase at Cubitt House with its Circus Light, a system of interconnected rings that will form a striking vertical decoration.

A further array of lighting brands and bespoke installations can also be found throughout the show’s other sites. In The Crossing lighting installations not to miss include a collaboration with Blackbody and Haviland, a union of light and porcelain. LG Display will also exhibit its OLED light panels, and will launch the LG OLED Design competition encouraging emerging and established designers to enter into this contest.

designjunction, London’s leading destination for contemporary interior design and culture, returns for its seventh year taking centre stage at the King’s Cross site from 21-24 September.

As the platform for cutting-edge design at the annual London Design Festival, the show delivers a specially curated programme of stellar international brands, striking installations, pop-up shops, exciting collaborations, and more.

GRANARY SQUARE

A first for designjunction, a collaboration with Turkishceramics will present a striking and fully immersive ceramic installation that will be created in the central fountain space. The selected artist Adam Nathaniel Furman will present ‘Gateways’, a series of colourful tiled gates that will invite visitors to take a journey through the rich history of ceramics in Turkey. The four gates are four meters high, each encompassing a different design story including: The Classic Gate, The Timber Gate, The Retro Gate and The Metro Gate.

Offering beautiful flowers direct from Dutch fields, flower delivery service bloomon will create a whimsical walk underneath a canopy of flowers with a pastel coloured passageway on Granary Square. Covered in foliage inside and out, the tunnel will be closed at one end with a secret hidden door, behind which a flower-filled room will host intimate workshops and talks, providing intrigue and inspiration.

The square will also provide a platform for a new collaboration with Renault UK, and will showcase Renault’s unique design philosophy with the award-winning concept TreZor car housed inside a bespoke interactive structure. Additionally, Renault’s collaboration with Central Saint Martins UAL (CSM) has challenged design students to design a car for the future with the results also on display at the show.

Campari®, Italy’s iconic red bittersweet apéritif, will host a two-week residency in Kings Cross. Campari Creates recreates the spirit of Milan’s stylish Navigli canal district, bringing a customised narrowboat to the Granary Square waterway throughout designjunction. The residency will focus on bringing two of Milan’s greatest exports to Kings Cross: Campari and creativity.

Over the two-week residency, a series of ‘Campari Creates Masterclasses’ allows attendees to get creative whilst sipping one of Campari’s signature serves. Alongside this, an artist will be commissioned to build a bespoke public installation inspired by Campari’s long history of creativity and design.

Granary Square will also welcome the Tala Mini bar that will serve a concoction of white ports and tonics from a refurbished vintage Mini Cooper. The Mini will also house a cluster of Voronoi bulbs on its roof to form a forest-like canopy, taking inspiration from the natural world.

Welcoming visitors to the show, three glass box pavilions by new initiative Remote Possibilities will house the show’s main reception. This focal point for designjunction visitors will be located at the entrance to Granary Square, alongside specially curated headline projects.

Design practice Maynard has partnered with designjunction to mastermind the wayfinding strategy for visitors coming to the King’s Cross site. Working in collaboration with designjunction’s Graphic Directors, BCMH, they have devised a strategy that will be used across the show.

Maynard has also worked with Marshalls to design a new range of brutalist inspired concrete street furniture. The modular range which includes seating, lighting and cycle parking will be launched at designjunction and will be positioned around Granary Square for the event.

THE CROSSING

Running through the centre of Central Saint Martins, The Crossing will play home to installations and partnership projects, including a collaboration with Rado, who will be showing finalists’ designs for the first Rado Star Prize UK competition. Targeting the next generation of young British designers, the winner will be announced at the show on the evening of Thursday 21 September.

Lighting up The Crossing, a union of light and porcelain welcomes a collaboration from two French studios BLACKBODY and Haviland, drawing visitors to glance up toward clusters of the ‘Helen, Light & Porcelain’ bespoke chandelier.

CUBITT HOUSE AND CUBITT PARK

Bringing a luxe approach to the VIP and Press room, The Lounge by Kirkby Design x Eley Kishimoto will showcase each of their unique styles. Eley Kishimoto’s passion for pattern will adorn the walls and furniture within this space serving to relax as well as engage those who visit.

The Lounge, located in new venue for 2017 Cubitt Park, will also play host to several special events including the Press Preview on 21 September; a breakfast for RIBA members; the Blueprint iGuzzini Architectural Photography Awards; and an NLA networking event.

In celebration of photography that fuses architecture, Blueprint Magazine launches its first ever Blueprint iGuzzini Architecture Photography Awards, aimed at both professional and amateur photographers. Photography from the finalists will be displayed within Cubitt Park, with two overall winners chosen by a public vote and announced during designjunction.

Prizes for the winning photography include a £1000 cash prize (professional) and an iGuzzini light worth £1000 (amateur), with 25% of the competition entrance fee being donated to charity Teddy’s Wish.

Suspended over the staircase of Cubitt House, Resident Studio will create an installation with its Circus Light that encompasses a system of interconnected rings to form a striking vertical decoration. Each brass ring projects an elegantly diffused warm LED light source outwards around a 360-degree plane.

designjunction returns to the spectacular King’s Cross site in September (21-24 September) for this year’s annual London Design Festival. Following the success of the 2016 edition, which attracted 27,000 visitors over five days, designjunction will expand across new King’s Cross locations for its flagship London show.

Taking place across five destinations including Cubitt House and Cubitt Park, The Canopy, Granary Square and The Crossing – a mix of global furniture, lighting, accessory, material and technology brands will exhibit alongside pop-up shops, installations and interactive features.

designjunction presents more than 200 of the world’s most iconic design brands to the world’s leading design professionals. It’s a junction connecting the industry – a place to meet, do business and be inspired.

Renault TreZor

GRANARY SQUARE

Granary Square will feature headline projects including a new collaboration with Renault UK. Renault will showcase their design philosophy in a unique and playful way, creating an immersive experience around the concept ‘Beautiful Life’. Renault TreZor, voted the ‘Most Beautiful Concept Car of the Year’ by the Festival Automobile Jury will make its UK debut at the show. Distinctive detail such as the analogue volt-meter and the animated honeycomb cooling vents on the bonnet make this concept a must-see for designers. Also on display will be the results of Renault’s collaboration with Central Saint Martins’ MA Industrial Design students, who are undertaking a brief on the future of modularity in car design.

Turkishceramics will create an installation in the central fountain space on Granary Square that celebrates the rich history of ceramics in Turkey. Representing over 30 individual ceramic manufacturers, Turkishceramics has previously collaborated with prestigious partners such as the Royal Academy of Arts, Zaha Hadid Architects and Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners as well as emerging practices vPPR and Studio Weave.

CUBITT HOUSE AND CUBITT PARK

Cubitt House and Cubitt Park will present a stellar line-up of international design brands including Lammhults, Design House Stockholm, Friends and Founders, Fredericia, Icons of Denmark alongside Channels, LSA, Decode, Another Country and Very Good & Proper.

Lightjunction – the decorative lighting section – returns with a curated mix of leading global lighting firms. Since its inception, lightjunction has attracted world-class brands including Artemide, DCW Èditions, FontanaArte, Marset, Northern Lighting, Örsjö and Slamp.

The Material Collective – a collaboration with material experts the SCIN gallery – will form an exciting new showcase exploring materials both of today and of the future.

THE CROSSING

The Crossing will house installations from Corian, Kirkby Design, Blackbody and partnership projects. This year designjunction has teamed up with design-led watch brand Rado, to launch the first-ever UK edition of the Rado Star Prize design competition.

The Rado Star Prize UK will target the next generation of young British designers working across interior, industrial and technology design, culminating in a spectacular exhibition and awards ceremony at the show.

The Rado Star Prize UK will explore the theme: Design meets Time – searching for innovative, timeless product concepts. To enter, candidates can submit their projects online at radostarprize.rado.com/uk. The competition is open to final year design graduates and emerging designers who do not yet work professionally.

THE CANOPY

The Canopy will be a temporary pop-up venue for premium retail brands and emerging design labels, selling everything from fashion accessories to technology, ceramics, glassware and stationery.

The line-up includes Areaware (Under Stone Marketing), Moxon, One We Made Earlier, Tom Pigeon, Sarah Straussberg, Oggetto and Dashel.

TALKS PROGRAMME

This year, designjunction launches a brand new talks programme at The Office Group in King’s Cross. The space, designed by Wells Mackereth and Studio Downie Architects, will host presentations discussions and demonstrations across two days set to challenge, provoke and engage with 21st century design.
