KEEPING STUDENTS IN
EdEn Building, Centre of Excellence in Education Innovation and Enterprise, Liverpool Hope University
“One of the challenges of sub-city university campuses is keeping the students in, during out-of-hours”, according to Vice Chancellor Prof. G. Pillay in setting up the design brief. This is true, for the academic term usually spans from September to June, in a grey and wet weather, especially in the north-west part of the country. “Yes, we pride ourselve with a dedicated ‘Garden University’ in our charter, beautiful landcape and courtyards but we also need more internal spaces”, he added.

To achieve this ethos, development programme has been carried out, such as Fresh Hope – student’s refectionery upgrade, commissioning the Angel Fields 21st Century Renaissance Garden as well as the expansion of the Education Deanery, incorporating the Enterprise Education unit.
The recently completed £8.5 million EdEn Building facilitates not only formal teaching rooms, but also meeting spaces, exhibition area and pockets of quiet areas for informal learning experience and knowledge sharing to take place. As Prof. Bart McGettrick, Dean of Education put it, this allows a new way of thinking in education and humanises the process of education. Dr Martin Carey, Chief Executive of Business Gateway and Urban Hope said: “It’s a super building which makes a major statement about Hope’s commitment to the knowledge economy”
The project, lead by Liverpool based architect Halsall Lloyd Partnership accommodates a 250 seat Conference Hall including interpretation and audio-visual facilities, five new research centres, CPD and Outreach facility for wider community use, cafe area as well as new garden areas in keeping with the University’s green strategy. Connecting these spaces, a naturally lit and ventilated cavernous street, with sinuous cantilevered podium spaces for the students and staff alike to encourage exchange of ideas whilst it’s pouring with rain outside. The building harmonises with its surrounding by visual and physical flow between internal and external spaces, bringing old building into new use and contextually regarded as a ‘sister building’ to existing Gateway Building across the avenue.
The building meets BREEAM Very Good 2008 credentials with sustainable energy-saving features incorporating photo-voltaic panels, hot water solar panels and rainwater harvesting.
