The University of Sheffield (informally TUOS) is a public research university in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, northern England. Its history traces back to the foundation of Sheffield Medical School in 1828, Firth College in 1879 and Sheffield Technical School in 1884.

University College of Sheffield was subsequently formed by the amalgamation of the three institutions in 1897 and was granted a royal charter as University of Sheffield in 1905 by King Edward VII. Sheffield is formed from 50 academic departments which are organised into five faculties and an international faculty.

Since RMJM was established in 1956, it has seen (and often participated in) some of the most significant architectural transformations of the last three generations. From 1970s camel racing grandstands in Dubai to terminals in Russia’s busiest airport in 2019, RMJM has worked on some truly unique and iconic projects, including the record-breaking Lakhta Centre, the LEED award-winning Khoo Teck Puat Hospital and the world’s first and only rotating boat lift, the Falkirk Wheel.

The new 9,500 square metre Furnival Building for the ACES Faculty (Arts, Computing, Engineering and Sciences) will be heated by a ground source heat pump, domestic hot water will be heated by solar panels and special photovoltaic cells will power the decorative outside lighting. The building will also link directly to the city’s Heat and Power unit for further heating.

English Architecture

There are about 1,100 listed buildings in the whole of the Sheffield postal district. Of these, only five are Grade I listed.

Fifty-nine are Grade II*, but the overwhelming majority are listed as Grade II. Compared to other English cities, Sheffield has few buildings with the highest Grade I listing: Liverpool, for example, has 26 Grade I listed buildings. This situation led the noted architecture historian Nikolaus Pevsner, writing in 1959, to comment that the city was “architecturally a miserable disappointment”, with no pre-19th-century buildings of any distinction.
