Chichu Art Museum Japan
Date built: 2004
Architect: Tadao Ando
Location: Naoshima island, Kagawa Prefecture, southern Japan
Chichu Art Museum was constructed as a site rethinking the relationship between nature and people. Artworks by Claude Monet, James Turrell, and Walter De Maria are on permanent display in this unusual building designed by Japanese architect Tadao Ando.
To ensure that the museum does not affect the beautiful scenery of Naoshima, the majority of the building is located underground on the south side of the island. Despite its positioning, it receives an abundance of natural light, changing the appearance of the artworks and the ambience of the space itself with the passage of the days and the seasons.
The Chichu Art Museum opened to the public on July 18, 2004.

The subterranean museum is administered by the Naoshima Fukutake Art Museum Foundation, a project of the Benesse Corporation whose president Soichiro Fukutake also acts as director of the facility. It exists as part of an ongoing initiative to “rethink the relationship between nature and people,” and is one of several arts-related sites in the area.
