Atatürk Cultural Center in Istanbul
8 Dec 2022
Design: Tabanlioglu Architects
Location: Istanbul, Western Turkey (Türkiye)
Atatürk Cultural Center, Turkey
Atatürk Cultural Center is located in Taksim Square, which hosts the intense urban activity of Istanbul and even Turkey. AKM is one of the landmarks of this crucial square and appears to have been reconstructed as of 2021.
AKM, which aims to bring together the venues that will serve social, artistic and cultural performances, has an iconic facade. The Opera Hall draws attention both from the inside and the outside with its red-colored shell, which consists of a giant sphere and is covered with thousands of ceramic pieces. Working with Tabanlıoğlu Architects, the principal architect of the building, Desmus took part in cultural architecture in the performance spaces. AKM welcomes art lovers with its 2040-seat Opera Hall, 781-seat Theater Hall, 410m² AKM Gallery and AKM Multi-Purpose Hall, all designed with advanced technology.
The “Opera Hall” has natural acoustics with works in the context of cultural architecture. It is among the qualified opera houses in the world in terms of high-quality voice and reverberation time. In the hall, the right acoustic conditions can be provided primarily for opera, but also for symphonic concerts and electro-acoustic supported shows. The coatings along the side walls were specially designed for acoustic needs.
Ellipsoid form was preferred for the design of the Opera Hall, which has a capacity of 2040 with its parterre and two balconies. Therefore good viewing angles were provided for the audience from every point of view. The orchestra pit, which is one of the important areas of the hall, is 125 m² in size and large enough to accommodate an orchestra of 85 people.
The Theater Hall has an audience capacity of 781 people. The Theater Hall, which hosts concerts and dance performances, especially theatrical performances, was equipped with high-level acoustic, light and visual systems.
Atatürk Cultural Center maintains its identity as the meeting place of art lovers today as it was in the past. The Atatürk Cultural Center, equipped to compete with its examples in the international arena, is a structure that will spread its light from Taksim Square to Istanbul and to the world.
