De Residence Pangandaran, Indonesia

De Residence Pangandaran is a set of 24 family terraced houses in Java, Indonesia. Behind their design stands the young Czech architect Erik Petrus, for whom is typical a strong author’s style. His work in Indonesia highlights the ability to connect contemporary architecture with local culture and exotic climate.

The young Czech architect Erik Petrus was so fascinated not only by the local exotic nature, but also by the culture and architecture: „As part of my hobby of traveling to exotic landscapes, I had the opportunity to travel through part of Asia. And it was Indonesia that became fatal for me.“ Thanks to a deep study of the local culture, climate and architecture, the architect Petrus was able to design a residential project that meets the contemporary requirements of its residents.

„The concept of individual family houses was inspired by a typical Indonesian house, called a joglo, which has a raised roof at its top, where hot air from the whole house accumulates, which is then simply vented out from this place,“ says the architect into the context of the contemporary concept of traditional architecture.

The skylight of each house not only removes the accumulated hot air, but also brings indirect light into the magnificent elevated space. It is the central point of the whole house – where is located the dining room with kitchen and the living room. On the upper floor you will find two bedrooms.

The complex’s facilities include not only a reception with security, but also a bar with an outdoor terrace or a small pool where residents can relax on hot days. „In addition to greenery that provides shade, water features such as ponds, streams and fountains are often used. These elements not only add aesthetic value, but can also improve the microclimate,“ describes the architect’s work with public space.

As for the materials, the architect chose primarily local materials „In projects, we normally use teak wood for doors and furniture, and marble or travertine, which is mined in local quarries, for floors and bathroom linings,“ explains the architect. He chose a reinforced concrete skeleton filled with batako bricks as the supporting structure, these are bricks made on site from volcanic material from nearby volcanoes.

The so-called musholla became part of the project. The investors decided to build the musholla to thank God, but also the local residents for the construction of the residential complex. Musholla represents an important point for the local community not only at the moment of prayer, but people also here lead a community life. Musholla impresses with its shape and the perforated bricks used – these protect the space from direct light.

It is the play of light and shadow that carries a strong symbolism within this building. „The light that comes from above through a narrow cutout in the dome symbolizes the presence of Allah,“ concludes the architect.
