Location: County Durham, northeast England, UK
Design: Medical Architecture
RIBA Awards 2012 Citation – Northeast:
This is a large and ambitious project for a 312 bed mental health village undertaken under the Public Finance Initiative. This new building type is currently being reassessed by the NHS to see how they work for patients and staff.
The village replaces an existing Victorian building that was clearly not suitable to either. The success of its replacement is demonstrated by the fact that one discharged patient ram-raided the gate to get back in. The staff also believe that the buildings succeed in ironing-out potential flash points that can occur in the day-to-day care of patients.
Overall there is a relaxed atmosphere with accommodation arranged around courtyards with varying degrees of security. Rooms are imaginatively designed to accommodate the psychological needs of the patients.
