Gloucester’s Kings Quarter – International Public Realm Competition
This new competition seeks an outstandingly talented design team to help deliver a landscaping and public realm scheme in the historic city of Gloucester. The competition is being organised by the RIBA on behalf of Gloucester Heritage Urban Regeneration Company Ltd.
Gloucester is renewing itself with a substantial programme of regeneration. An integral part of the wider scheme is the transformation of King’s Square, the city’s largest and most important public space. This will become the city’s main gathering and meeting place as well as the premier venue for outdoor entertainment. The promoters have high aspiration for a design that is creative and practical, respects the city’s historic context and at the same time creates a thrilling and distinctive contemporary sense of place. The competition seeks a multi-disciplinary design team to work closely with the promoters to design and deliver the project.
Chris Oldershaw, Chief Executive of Gloucester Heritage Urban Regeneration Company, said: “This project is central to the wider retail-led, mixed use regeneration of the Kings Quarter that will deliver 300,000 sq ft of new shops and 250 city centre flats and apartments by 2012. We are looking forward to receiving some inspiring and stimulating designs which will grab the attention of the judging panel and the wider community across Gloucester”.
Gloucester City Council Leader, Paul James, commented : “This is a unique opportunity to help shape one of the most important areas of the city. Kings Square is the premier public space in the city centre and people in Gloucester deserve a square they can be proud of. The redevelopment of Kings Square has been talked about for years and people are desperate to see it happen. The design competition is the first stage in delivering on this aspiration”.
Selection will take the form of a two stage process, which at stage one will invite expressions of interest. A shortlist of up to six teams will be drawn up and invited to produce concept designs.
Anyone interested in being considered should contact the RIBA Competitions Office for a preliminary briefing paper. The deadline for expressions of interest is 31st January 2008.
