Hawkins\Brown completes Bob Champion Building
Hawkins\Brown has completed the Bob Champion Research and Education Building, the University of East Anglia’s most recent building in the Norwich Research Park.
The facilities are targeted at improving translational research in collaboration with the NHS whilst the clinical teaching areas are focussed on providing authentic healthcare learning environments for the university’s medical school.
Pioneering research being undertaken in the building includes treatments for diseases affecting ageing populations, immunology and anti-biotic resistance. The building will house a unique site-wide bio-bank facility, as well as education facilities for undergraduate and postgraduate students.
The western red cedar clad building shelters a sunny south facing courtyard that looks towards the original UEA campus and NNUH. The main entrance is characterised by a generously lit atrium, animated by the building’s shared cafe at ground level and the sweeping staircase that joins both wings of the building above.
The project was delivered within a budget of £12.5 million. The spaces are designed to be flexible and welcoming for patients, students and community groups as well as academics and staff. The building is the first new piece of the expansion of the NRP and is key to setting a benchmark of quality for the wider masterplan.
Rebecca Wharry, project architect at Hawkins\Brown, said: “Collaboration is at the heart of what Hawkins\Brown do. We are proud to play a part in creating fulfilling places of work and learning for people who are pioneering in their field and the BCRE project was no exception.”
Further facilities include:
– 200 seat lecture theatre
– Seminar rooms and clinical skills suites for undergraduate students
– Laboratories, open-plan offices and technical support spaces for postgraduate students
