Atherstone Market Pavilion Building
Location: Atherstone, Warwickshire, UK
Design: Sjölander da Cruz Architects
This innovative design for a glass and oak pavilion in Atherstone is set to become an exciting addition to the civic landscape and fuses art and architecture to create a focal point for the regeneration of the town.
The design responds to the reinvention of Atherstone as a book town, with the form derived from the structure of trees it can be seen to elude to the mythical tree of knowledge. With the three trees representing the past present and future of the town the pavilion provides shelter and a focus for local events, the book festival and live music.
The pavilions large and dynamic glass doors allow people to flow through and inhabit the space beneath the canopy of the trees, the glass surround appears to dissolve into the background allowing the tree cluster to stand alone as a civic art in its own right.
