Multisport Hall, New Cairo Administrative city – Egypt Arena
The New Cairo Multisports Arena was conceived as a landmark facility within Egypt’s new Administrative Capital, designed to host up to 15,000 spectators for major international competitions.
Initiated in 2019, it represents one of the country’s most ambitious sports infrastructure projects. As the only non-Egyptian team involved in the masterplan, Studio MAAC brought its expertise in large-scale arenas to create Africa’s largest and most technically advanced indoor venue.
The project responds to a dual ambition: to symbolize Egypt’s modernization and to provide a world-class, multifunctional facility integrating aesthetics, performance, and efficiency.
Its design combines architectural simplicity with cultural resonance, evoking a modern reinterpretation of the Bedouin tent : an elegant, compact, and climatically responsive structure that blends innovation with identity.
More technicals info:
1)Environmental Qualities and Sustainability
Designed from concept to completion to minimize carbon footprint, addressing both embodied and operational emissions.
Prefabrication at multiple levels : high-performance steel structure, tensile roof, and lightweight textile façades. That reduces material waste, shortens on-site work, and lowers transport emissions.
Local sourcing and workforce: materials and labor are primarily local, strengthening the regional economy and reducing embodied energy.
Optimized energy performance through passive and natural ventilation suited Cairo’s arid climate.
Building orientation, shading, and air-flow strategies limit the need for mechanical cooling or heating, drastically cutting operational energy use.
Landscape design adapted to desert context: minimizes irrigation, uses reflective hard surfaces to reduce heat absorption, and provides shaded pedestrian areas.
Stormwater management via graded surfaces and permeable joints enables natural infiltration.
Emphasizes intelligent adaptation over imitation of greenery : local materials, passive control, and resilient construction.
Establishes a holistic, context-sensitive sustainability model, positioning the New Cairo Arena as a regional benchmark for efficient, climate-responsive design.
2)Integration in the Environment and Benefits for the Local Community
Serves as a key anchor of Cairo’s new Administrative Capital Olympic City, easily accessible via major roads and public transport.
Compact footprint preserves open space and encourages pedestrian connections.
Strengthens Egypt’s role as a regional sports and cultural hub, fostering community pride, events, and tourism.
Architectural symbolism: the translucent textile façade and curved geometry reinterpret the Bedouin tent (Khaimah), merging tradition and modernity.
Landscape integration: native vegetation, shaded plazas, and permeable paving improve outdoor comfort and reduce heat accumulation.
Creates a civic landmark that balances cultural identity, technical innovation, and environmental sensitivity.
3)User Experience
Spectator-centered design ensures perfect visibility from every seat.
Intuitive circulation across multiple levels guarantees safe and fluid movement.
Natural light, ventilation, and warm materials provide comfort with minimal energy use.
The textile façade filters daylight, balancing transparency and shade throughout the day.
Accessibility, safety, and acoustics meet international standards.
Offers a monumental yet human-scaled atmosphere: inclusive, inspiring, and comfortable for athletes, visitors, and staff.
4)Architectural Qualities
Balances monumentality with elegance through a rhythmic envelope of triangular textile panels.
Compact bowl configuration provides excellent sightlines and acoustics.
Clear span over 100 meters delivers a vast, unobstructed interior volume.
Efficient organization of circulation, seating, and access enhances legibility and flow.
The textile façade acts as a climatic filter and visual signature, shifting in appearance from day to night.
Achieves a simple yet expressive form, rooted in local references but executed with modern precision.
5)Innovation and Originality
Advanced engineering meets contextual design: a 3D steel roof structure spans 100 meters without intermediate supports.
Prefabricated elements and modular seating ensure flexibility and efficient assembly.
Combines sustainable strategies (natural ventilation, passive cooling, ecological landscaping) with high-performance materials for durability.
Dynamic façade geometry modulates light and transforms the arena’s appearance throughout the day.
Represents a fusion of high-tech efficiency and low-impact design, offering a forward-looking model for large-scale public buildings in arid climates.
